I downloaded the PortableApp_Suite_Standard_1.0.exe and copied it onto a 2GB USB stick. Then I plugged the stick into a computer running Windows XP Home SP2 all up to date, and ran it. It ran through to at least 99% and then exited leaving behind a box listing 3666 7-Zip errors, each saying that it had failed to open a (different) new file.
It did manage to create the new folders Documents, Video, Music, and something else, plus the hidden Desktop.ini. So it can write to the root of the stick, where I told it to install, as advised.
There is plenty of room on the stick - at least 1.5GB.
This is not good. What do I do? I have tried again, and I have tried running from a command prompt, after checking that there are no hidden files taking up all the space. Same behavior.
If I can't get this going it will have to be back to Ubuntu, as Windows XP isn't ready for the desktop.....

Downloading the Installer again? If not, it could be corrupted. If that doesn't work, your drive could also be corrupted.

Well, those sounded like good suggestions. I tried re-running the installer (again). This time it staggered a bit further before falling over, but still didn't complete.
I erased everything on the memory stick, checked it in Windows, and re-downloaded the installer. This time it ran with only 97 errors, which gave me the menu, but nothing would run except ClamWin and Sudoku. Tried one more time, and it eventually finished without any reported errors, and all the programs run.
I have to say I'm underwhelmed. It's a nice idea, but if it doesn't install it's not going to be adopted. I've been switching to linux for nearly a year, so I can handle some configuration, but most people will drop it at the first sign of errors and buy MS Word.

Sorry to say, but it's a hardware problem on your end. It's not the software. There have been over 1 million downloads of the Suite. And we'd be SWIMMING in bug reports if there were errors in the installer.
Try installing it to a local directory (**NOT** an external drive)... even to your desktop... and it will work fine. The problem is likely one of the following:
1. A malfunctioning device (some drives heat up and fail with continuous use)
2. An underpowered USB port which is causing the device to lose connectivity with the machine at random points
3. A malfunctioning USB port that is randomly loosing connections
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I have number three.
Cause I have a laptop, and people sit beside me, stand up, walk into the USB drive, and back, the port's bent. Screwed up one of my flash drives once.

The suggestion of permission problems makes sense. How exactly would I change permissions in WinXP? It seems to lack some elements I got used to in linux......
