Hi, Nowdays most, if not all, USB flash drives come with preloaded software and formating to some extent. I don't know if I'm fully commited to installing PortableApps so I have a few questions.
1) Does PortableApps rewrite/reformat the entire drive or is it a standalone program?
> a)If so, is there a way to back up/rip ever piece of software/formating that is preloaded on the drive?
2)Does PortableApps also give me the option to save settings/desktop environment or just programs?
Please answer my questions, If I didn't need you help I wouldn't have asked. More questions will come soon (they're bound to).
Bring your desktop environment, PortableApps.com just packages regular applications so they run from a portable drive. However if you want, there's a beta version of the suite in the Beta Testing forum that will allow you to change the wallpaper automaticially.
PortableApps will certainly not re-format the drive, they are each just individually installed to the drive, unless you download the Suite, in which case a bunch of applications are installed to the drive.
I don't understand 1a? You won't need to backup anything that's currently on the drive, it won't be touched. But I don't think that's what you're asking?

I heard that this was some sort of a program to make apps portable. How complicted is it and where can I get it?
Yeah, I was asking about how the suite would effect my drive. Once it's installed can I still acsess my files normally or through the suite application?
apparently kingstons "migo" line of flash drives somehow take one desktop enviro and save it and then project it onto other computers that use that drive.
and dont be nervos about the install, it doesent reformat the drive (to my knowlage it hasent) it installs to the root of the drive and makes the computer recognize the drive as the portable apps drive.

Zoop
that could be overwritten is the autorun.inf but only IF your drive had one before you install the PortableApps.com Platform. (Mine had one to provide a logo)

They listed that as a bug so do all versions do that?
(Ure sure that's only thing that is rewritten?)
Whats the difference betwwen the suite and the platform?
How do I find out if I had autorun?
(My drive is a Memorex 2GB Rotodrive if that helps.)
A box pops up when you insert your drive asking you what you want to run, and you have a CUSTOM application listed.
Just open Explorer, go to Tool, Folder Option..., View and check Show Hidden Files and Folder. The autorun.inf (if you have one) will probably be in the root of the drive.

The suite is the menu and all the programs. The platform is basicially just a new name for the menu, the custom folders, etc.

To save you some questions:
Many USBdrives today come with a preinstalled environment called U3. I have removed it from one drive and used these apps, including the suite and menu without problems. I have a second drive where I left the U3 in place and simply installed the menu and apps in a directory under the main partition. It works fine too.
Many of these apps will also work under Linux by using a Windows compatibility app called 'wine' (or one of several variants). I've used several under PCLinuxOS 0.93a and 2007 (originally based off of Mandriva's predecessor, Mandrake), for specific distros. A quick Forum search indicated that some of the testing was done under Ubuntu, which is Debian-based. There was a recent thread discussing the ability to run these apps under Mac with a wine variant, Crossover Mac. That SHOULD let you run these apps across almost any platform you encounter without taking away any compatibility with previously installed apps on you USB drive.
Ok, In folders it says that none are hidden but whenever I insert it The folder pops up. Right now on Computer it calls my drive MEMOREX whatever. If I install and uninstall PA Platform what will my drive be known as?
Ejected the drive and re-inserted in since the Install? Try it. (safely remove it)
