How can I rename the apps in the menu? I saw an executable on here somewhere, but I'd rather rename the apps manually. Is there some way to do it?
Also, what about icons in the start menu for the apps? Can those be changed?

What exactly am I supposed to "hack" with RH to change the displayed *.exe name? I figured there would be a line somewhere that basically states the same text as that which is displayed for the exe. Some help would be great.
Thanks,
Zack
In the .exe, the one that says
AppName Portable, search thru the files of the exe in Resource Hacker and change that one. It should be somewhere under version info.

Thank you
Ok, so I used Resource Hacker to change the following
VALUE "ProductName", "7-Zip Portable" to VALUE "ProductName", "7-Zip"
then compiled and saved.
Now when I try to run the program I get this error message:
NSIS Error
The Installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.
You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.
It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch
(NOT RECOMMENDED).
[OK]
The program still works correctly if I use the /NCRC command line switch, but otherwise I cannot use the links in the PA menu or the *.exe file directly to launch. Did I do something wrong or is this the reason you can't/shouldn't do this?![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Also tried rehacking the name back to the original value and that doesn't help.
Zack
A save thing.
Get a open the original in ResHacker, change the nessary.
Close the VersionInfo tree, it will ask you if you want to compile.
Say yes, now save it as NewName.exe (don't overwrite the original) And compile like I said.
It works for me.

Followed your directions as precisely as I could.
1) Opened 7-ZipPortable.exe in ResourceHacker (Completely New install of 7-zip, so fresh clean exe)
2) Open Version Info > 1 > 1003
3) Edited Line VALUE "ProductName", "7-Zip Portable" to read VALUE "ProductName", "7-Zip" ***
4) Closed Version Info folder and was asked "would I like to Compile"
5) Selected Yes to Compile
6) Save as "7-zip.exe"
And it still gives me the error message.
***I also changed the following values on a second attempt (using the original file), so that all occurances of 7-ZipPortable were replaced with 7-Zip
VALUE "FileDescription", "7-Zip"
VALUE "InternalName", "7-Zip"
Should I be decompressing the 7-zipPortable.exe with UPX first?
Zack
reshack Johns Launchers. They have a CRC test built in that prevents them from running after someone tampered them.
You have to recompile the NSIS scripts with the name changed.

I figured the error had something to do with a "security" feature. Sorry, wasn't trying to do anything sketchy, just wanted to redo my appmenu names. So I guess there are two options for me, learn to use NSIS or wait for the next PAmenu release.
Whats a good resource for learning about NSIS?
Zack
...a very good resource. You can read thru the NSIS Manual as well, but you learn a lot from trying to understand the launcher.
P.S. You can change the names in the Pam MOD that's in the Beta forums eh?

Johns Launcher-sources (take something easy like VirtualMagnifyingGlass to start with). If you want to know more check out wikipedia or the official command list.

Brutal Chess (in the beta testing forum) is easy.![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
First line - Sets the program out path the the program directory because apparently games like to think THEIR executable is the AppNamePortable.exe executable, and then they can't find their friend components in that directory.![Blum](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/blum3.gif)
Second line - Executes the program.

I should have added that. You can also change the icon. With the portables here, you'll need to decompress them with upx.
Command line is:
Recompress is:
Other wise it'll screw it up.

While you are waiting for the Officisl Haller version of the PAM to be updated to accomplish this task, you can try one of the PAM mods available in the Beta forum. My personal choice is the R30 mod. SmithTech's mod also appears to be well liked altough I haven't tried it; not needing encryption.
Although I love portable apps, I find PAM and clones very restrictive, so I use PStart that allows for drag & drop adding of executables with the option of specifying command line arguments for launching and creates a simple context menu for a single click on the task tray icon.
It's a nice alternative until (in my opinion) PAM reaches similar functiality.
I will say, PAM looks a lot more asthetically pleasing than PStart.
