Sync Illiterate

Woot first post!
I have been waiting for an app like Tucan as I have been using Portableapps for over a year on all my PCs and USB. Other than once having a PDA that automatically did the sync'ing, I have never used sync software and even the brief help section on the app is not enough for me. I did a google search too, but can not find a web page that will give me step by step explanations on how to use it and what it can do. I am not even sure if it only sync up files or will go as far as sync'ing bookmarks which would actually be altering a file. Any help would be appreciated.

Included Help

Please see the included help files. All details are contained in there.

It is not for syncing bookmarks or other partial files.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

TY

But I believe in my initial post I stated I already did look at the included help files. After clicking on the help button they are listed as
* Sync
* Backup
* Secure
* Portable Variables
* Command Line
which are the choices of the included help files (in addition to the links to the help sections on this web site which are specific only to PortableApps.) The included help files only give a cursory description of the buttons and boxes of each tab. Unfortunately this is not enough for me to understand its use. I was hoping that someone knew of a site that would explain either this program better (maybe even with step by step instructions) or another program that had similar functions so that I could apply them to Toucan.

Hi,

currently Toucan will only Sync whole files, rather than the partial sync that you are looking for. What is it you are trying to do?

Hi

Well I did not expect that it could synch partial files such as bookmarks, though I had hoped. I have most of your apps on a USB and use them almost exclusively on my home and work PC and have them in their own partition just for the purpose of being able to keep things sync'ed and clean. I have to use a lot of other PCs at work too and sometimes use the USB to run the programs I need. I would like to be able to keep these three identical in general sort of like I did with my PDA before I tossed it since I did not find it to be a tenth as useful as your apps. But my PDA was automatically sync'ed in its dock and I am not familiar at all with sync software. So at this point, I am doing it all by hand every few days. Updating the bookmarks is not so tough, but I keep having to check dates and files to make sure I am updating the right ones and have deleted or over written the newer files doing it by hand.

But as I am thinking this through though, one of the other things I think I was hoping it would do was to sync up my calender and contacts on thunderbird and sunbird. Since it does not alter files, it would not automatically do that. On the other hand, if I understood how to use it right, I bet I could get it to mirror the correct file to do that.(?).

Anyway, I think you see my dilemma; the description of this app is "backup, sync and encrypt for advanced users" and I am not an advanced user, but willing to learn it if pointed in the right direction on the typical capabilites and script and all. I assumed Toucan was like GIMP in that it had a "full-sized" version that it started as where I might be able to find more thorough documentation about it as the help files are limited.

Right then,

the easiest way to do what you want is to only modify one set of your bookmarks at a time. For example I have two jobs set up in Toucan, on called CopyToHome and one called CopyToFFP. When I have finished using the copy on my PC I use the CopyToFFP job which uses the mirror function to create an exact copy of the PC's profile on my portable device, then when I get back to my PC I run the CopyToHome job which mirrors it back again. You could do a similar thing with Thunderbird and Sunbird as well I expect although I do not use them myself.

As for improving the help files this is my number one goal after the release of the next version which should make it stable and bug free (there is a problem with the Sync-Mirror mode at the moment so I would recommend that you wait until 1.2 comes out in the next couple of days).

If you need any more help (for example which folders to mirror) please don't hesitate to ask.
