Ok, so I have a site, and I am going to get new hosting quite soon, so I'm finally working on putting the site together. The site is http://www.nascent-project.org. I'm planning on making it a heavily community contributed site. So far, I have the following features in mind.
- Wiki (I'm thinking MediaWiki)
- List of Open Source Software (LOSS)
- Oh! So that's how you say it... (Proper pronunciations for words learned on the computer)
That's what I have in mind for the Wiki, does everyone think MediaWiki's a good choice? As for the topics in the wiki, please let me know what topics you might have as well, thanks.
- Blog (I'm thinking WordPress)
- Current updates on the site
The blog will just provide updates of the site and such, WordPress will be fine, right? Does anyone have any better suggestions.
- RSS Feeds (Hopefully user contributed)
- Latest releases of open source software
- Integrated Blog feed
For the RSS Feed, the first one I have listed, I was thinking of having a form where you fill in the Title of the release, the link to the release, the description of the release, and pick an image for the release for current open source software logos. Is this possible, to have the form input the values inside of that rss xml tags? I know it may be hard, but it's possible, right?
- IRC (I'm thinking pkeffect or Freenode)
- IRC Chat for the Nascent Project
For the IRC chat, I'm going to work on adding PJIRC into my webpage, as for the server, pkeffect has set me up a channel, but I have also been considerig Freenode since a lot of projects use it, and it takes the load of pkeffect
- Site Theme (Currently, Shades of Grey)
That's my current template I was using, if you can find something better that's nice and open source, please give me a link.
So, I think that's all the ideas I have for now, I've thought about forums, but if I do, it won't be for a while, and I see no huge use for them. I was also thinking about setting up Gallery just for some certain things, I haven't really tried it out yet.
Any other suggestions for anything about the site would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
With the RSS I could help. Also I could help with some of the graphics. (mind you I'm pretty new to GIMP)

As all of ya should know Micro$oft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or FreeBSD on yer Windows comp.

Feedburner for customizing the RSS feeds? Or, as you're thinking of using WordPress, check this article.
Oh! Idea! How about a forum? Like in here. It may be as useful as the IRC chat. You can make it in drupal, like this forum.
Don't forget to check if the server where you're putting your site supports all techs you want to put there.

I was thinking of trying out drupal.
But to quote my above.

Thanks for the feedburner thing, I'll look into it. I'll read that article too. And as for the server, I'm switching hosting, and you can pick PHP 4 or 5, so I'll probably get 5, as most of the apps are written in it.
Thanks man.

MediaWiki = Good.
Wordpress = Good.
Did you end up getting MW set up, or do you need my help again? Also, I've got some links you can use for integrating MW and WP:

If you plan on getting a lot of traffic, optimize wordpress. The default install of this will die under heavy load on most webhosts. (very resource intensive).
I dont use it myself so i can't give any tips, but this is from experience of visiting sites like Digg and Slashdot.
The grey is a bit boring i think, its not really what i would go with.
Otherwise, looking good.
