Lock folder/app

There isn't a utility like this one... that's why I'm requesting it... Sad

I would like an App that "closes" or "lock" a folder and hide it, inside that folder is my portable menu, my portableapps folder and my documents folder...

Then, when I insert the portable drive, autorun call the "locker/closer" to type a password to unlock/open the folder and launch the portable menu, every app associated with it and unlock the folders.

When I close the portable menu (i.e. ASuite or PStart) the App closes/locks and hide the folder again.

Don't need of encription or something so hard... it is just a password protection folder for average Joe, with the ability to autolaunch an app and autolock (or request to lock) before ejecting.

Of course it should be able to change the password.

Obviously, if you open the drive skipping the autorun.inf file you'll see the folder-locker app only (Well, in my case, I use lost.exe, and would like to call the folder-locker from the lost.exe's ok button, so here you'll only see lost.exe, folder-locker and associated files like *.ini).

I was looking at AutoHotKey Documentation to see if I can do it myself, but I'm not a programmer and don't understand most of the instructions.

Is it possible?

Keep reading up on AHK

I'm not much of a programmer myself, but in my opinion AHK is pretty easy to understand. Just follow the tutorials section of the help file. I did, and now i've written an AutoMouseClicker to simulate rapid click in PC games just when the user holds down the left mouse button, an app to remove/restore the username and/or picture from the start menu, and remapped the keyboard of my work laptop to use the extra Function key as the Windows key because the laptop doesn't have the windows key.

folders can have a password added to them and they can be selected to be a hidden file as well.

7-zip will let you add a

7-zip will let you add a password to a zip file. not sure about making it hidden though

no app...

windows compression client will do it. just right click and send to a "Compressed/Zipped folder", after the folder is created go in to it and make shure the files arent corruptedthen go to file>add a password inside of the zipped folder. then it will do one of two things when you opent he zipped folder. #1, ask you for a password right off the bat, #2 is the more likely one, ask you for a password every time you try to open one of the files in the password protected zip folder.

7-zip might do the same but i am not shure.

anyway, as lond as you have windows, you can have compressed and password protected files.

Password protect not zip

Zip/Unzip will force me to store something on HD or write and rewrite on Pdrive... I'm looking something specifically like lockngo but open source and that allow me to launch a file/app from the folder when unlocking... is just a password, not zip/unzip

I'm using it now...

I'm using this software now, but it doesn't let me autolaunch an app/file when unlock... Sad

There is a post about secure apps (https://portableapps.com/node/7358) I will give it a try... until find something better...

There are increasing post about password protection... my hope is that soon a programmer will add this feature to an existing app (i.e. lost, applauncher, pam, asuite, pstart, etc) or create a new one... Smile

Not Possible

This is *NOT* possible on a removable drive. It *HAS* to convert the file into something else to 'password protect' it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

not exactly...

the folders are zip/unzip, just click on the file>enterthe file>filemenu>extract all and enter password.

on top of that they are drag and drop and you can just put the file on the PAM drive and then compress and delete the original. i do stuff like this on my school's network drive to keep the IT guys out. (Note: I prepare all password protected files at home and write them to my network drive)

zip encrypt

Well, a couple of things.

First, zip encryption - at least the kind that works on Windows zip folders - is a good way to keep honest people out, but it's not that hard to break.

Second, I'm pretty sure that "behind the scenes" the Microsoft zip folder driver is uncompressing the files to your temp directory, and not necessarily removing them later, or removing them completely so they can't be "undeleted". Again, probably good enough to keep honest people out.

Third, zip folders aren't available on all windows machines. On some, they'll just show as a zip file. 7-zip can open them, but you have the same issue of finding a place to extract to and remembering to clean up later.

They may not make a utility like that. Ever.

Which is why I use simple DOS programming to make a workaround (not hard to break, but writes minimal to the disk). The folder in question ("Documents" in my example) becomes a (hidden) "Control Panel"!

I've compiled a batch file called key.bat (from various sources) and kept in the PortableApps folder of my thumb-drive. Won't be too hard if you know little DOS. Try it out:

To view the contents of your secret folder, run this batch file and close the program when it says to Press any key to continue...
To "Lock" it back, run the program again, this time actually Pressing any key to Continue.

You may try modifying the code to keep this key deep inside somewhere within folders.

Again, its not secure. Also, anyone can delete it. (Umm... In such a case, Please help me figure out how to disallow read-only folders from being deleted...)But keeps "normal" users from accessing it. And yes, it works only on Windows!

Toucan can secure folders

The portable App Toucan can secure a folder for you by encrypting it with a password.
Just select a folder of file in Toucan under Secure tab and encrypt it with a password. After the encryption, the program or file will not work and no one can have excess to it. To undo it, go back to toucan, select folders you encrypted and select decrypt as function along with the previous password you used to encrypt.

Here's how I auto secure folders on a usb drive

I am using a combination of ASuite and TrueCrypt. I have TrueCrypt set up to automatically execute when ASuite starts, immediately prompting me for the password. After entering the password, TrueCrypt creates a virtual drive containing my encrypted files/folders. In addition to encryption, it's convenient because I set up TrueCrypt to always map to the same drive, in my case X:\.

To close TrueCrypt, I added another instance of Truecrypt to the ASuite menu and set it to automatically execute it when ASuite closes. Here are the paramaters I am passing to the TrueCrypt items in ASuite.

Mount: /q /c /l x /a /b /m rm /v $Drive\Documents\files.tc
Unmount: /q /d /b',1,true

I suppose I should search the site for more about TrueCrypt ...

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more said about it. It does create a very well encrypted mountable file system. And it does work in "traveler" mode.

The main issue with "traveler" mode is that one has to have Admin access to set up the driver, at least the first time. Once an admin has done it once, I think I recall seeing that a regular user can then use traveler mode to open a file system, but what happens if you are on a public computer that hasn't been "set up" that way? Or maybe the wizards here have found a way around that, other than running something like BartPE?
