POS 1.0 installation trouble on M$Win2k

OS Win2k fully updated, Firefox 2.0.0.6, Open Office 2.2.1, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, Zone Alarm 7.0.337 loaded + other apps.

When I tried to install POS 1.0 on a PNY Tech Attache 2G flash drive in N:\\PortableApps\PASuite with the downloaded .exe file in that location as well I received over 2300 errors in the log spread across all apps in the suite. The installed PortableApps (installed under PASuite by the installer) is 151 MB with 3,661 files in 529 folders. I also have the patch .exe, in the same PASuite folder, for OS's earlier than XP.

1. with over 2,300 errors which noted many .jar extensions, which I though were Linux/Unix extensions, would it likely be safe to attempt to run what is there to see where it takes me. This is a business desktop so I do not lean toward a risk side on it knowingly.

2. where might I go from here. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted.

POS?

I know what I mean when I say POS. Do you mean Portable Applications Suite? It is commonly referred to around here as PAM or PAP(Platform) or maybe PAS(Suite). It is not an OS.

If that is the case. I would download another copy. Sounds corrupted.

JAVA files

noted many .jar extensions

I believe the .jar files are Java Archive files not Linux.

re-tried no smile

OK I downloaded another copy and tried another install after fully deleting the previous copy. No smile. Next I tried an install from a local drive to the same folder name on another local drive. Full install with no errors. The catch came when I tried to run the "StartPortableApps.exe." This produced an error message followed by the error box being closed when OK was clicked. Then I tried to run "PortableAppsMenu.exe." No smile again. Lastly I tried running Swrite & Scalc from their respective folders. The Portable Apps splash screen comes up for a time then goes away for each app. I tried re-booting. Same error pattern. No Smile yet. I also tried copying the root folder to the flash drive with the same results. BTW the .exe patch is in the root directory as instructed for preXP versions. I actually have W2kPro, fully updated, on the machine.

Still no smile

OK I installed portable apps standard version on a hard drive & still get the error when trying to open the menu or swriter, etc. However I also installed, in another folder, firefox and it works fine from the hard drive but after copying the folder to the flash drive will not work from there. It also will not install there as it tels me there is an I/O error yet the drive is relatively new and has worked with everything else I have put on it. In case of a bad spot I also cleared the drive which was a 2G fat formated unit and formatted it as fat32 and then tried again. Still no smiles. Still running W2kPro updated.

Guess what the Suite runs fine 4 me and I am using an Attache

I have used it on Win2k w/o probs. Also it might be one of those drives that had poor workmanship. Also never buy technology (or anything as a matter of fact) from Wal-Mart since I have heard that WM buys the stuff from the factories that came out bad.

If this is

a business machine, are you in a domain? What group policies are affecting your machine? I keep the machines at work locked down so that you can't use flash drives at all. Trying to run these apps on a business machine, you might run into numerous errors. I would suggest trying the newer version of the PAM that you've downloaded on another machine, and see what the results are there.

No W2k smile - XP ok

I re-installed FF on an XP machine at the college and it worked fine there but I did not have time to try the same with the full suite today. That will have to wait till next week. Regarding domain, etc. this W2k machine is just on a small P2P LAN with a W98se file server. Nothing exotic at all. The Attache was recently obtained, not from Walmart but from Fry's. Not a totally stellar rep either but I have not had any trouble with their parts since they opened almost 10 years ago. Drive, mobo's, ram, cd, cdrw, dvdrw, flash, etc. have all been fine. One drive from Best Buy did fail, out of 3 obtained, days before the war. ran out. Testing the same FF installation of the flash drive that worked at the college I find it still gives the same error on W2k so it seems it is a W2k compatibility problem.

The only other thing

I can think of is to try another flash drive. They're dirt cheap, now. You can get one with plenty of room to hold the entire PAM suite for short money, and try that out.

Agree with knfmn

It looks like you have narrowed it down to your flash drive.

Test another drive, on the same pc.

The PAM Suite and FFPE are compatible with Windows 2000.

Drive E position OK on 2nd system

I just tried the same flash drive on a 2nd machine I have with W2kPro fully updated where the flash drive is in drive E position. On the problem machine it is in drive N position as there are many partitions on that machines hard drive along with a card reader, etc. that make N the next available slot. It works in the drive E slot but even though the menu loads and the app attempts to load it ultimately fails with the same error message as previously. Monday I will be able to test the menu & apps on an XP machine at the college in drive E position.

Test of 2nd Flash Drive

As suggested I also tried a 2nd flash drive by installing into the root of a 512M PNY flash drive. The same errors were presented. This drive installs into letter P position and this machine. I will also try this flash at the college Monday. If both drives work in E on my other W2kPro machine & the XP machines at the college but not in N or P on the problem machine it would appear the problem is the drive letter assigned.

2nd 512M Flash Drive on Drive E is OK

I just finished installing portable apps on the small 512M flash drive and it works if installed in drive E position. This is being sent via firefox on that drive. So far it seems it will not work installed on any other drive slot. This installation is directly in the root of the drive while the 2G drive is 4 directories down into the drive. Both work as drive E installations. I will test it again at the college Monday to see how it works there. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Maybe someone else out there has had an opportunity to try installing in a different drive location. I would be interested in your experiences also it you would share them.

Not Drive Letter

It's not the drive letter. I regularly use the whole PortableApps.com Suite from B, C, D, F, G and P in multiple folder locations. It works without issue. The apps and platform do NOT care where they run from as long as it's not from an unmapped network drive.

The problem is entirely with your setup. It sounds like it could be a hardware or software issue or permissions issue or some odd combination, but it's something odd with your setup that you'll have to try and diagnose.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Drive letter issue.

Thanks for the feedback. As time permits I will check further into the problem box to see what can be done. At least now I know it is a local issue with my box.

Thanks again.
