Shortcuts Launcher

Hello guys, this is my first time here. I'm using many of the portable apps and I found them very helpful, the reason I'm writing here is to present an application which I write in Visual Basic which it will make the use of portable apps more easy. Shortcuts Launcher is a small toolbar placed on the top of the screen with space for 10 shortcuts. What you have to do is to use "EDIT" button and add the applications which you want to start with a double click from this toolbar. The application is BETA, that means that it maybe contains errors/bugs and I'm also open for any suggestions. It follows a link where you can download Shortcuts Launcher.

I am waiting for your comments!

Is your source code

Is your source code available? At present time this site only supports open source applications. In the near future a freeware and even payware server will be set up, but for now it's open source only. If you are willing to make the source available, please post the link to that as well. If not, leave your current link up until a Moderator responds.

I'm not sure I follow your question. Is there a specific logo, name or layout you want to copyright? I don't think you can make the code open but then put limits on it that nobody can change it at all. But I don't know much about the legal side of things, so you may want to check other locations as well

Legally...

From what I know, legally something is copyright to you as soon as you make it, unless you give the copyrights away (or it violates copyrights itself).

You can easily give the source code away, allowing people to do what they want with it, with simple limitations that you must be credited.

Hmm?

I like the app. It in itself is a nice simple app. However it is definately missing some visual appeal.

Well.

It dosn't look that nice. I don't think you need anything special. But it looks like a Win 95 or 98 application. Maybe you could at least give it an XP Look. The application doesn't seem buggy (I havn't found any yet), you just need to work on making it look nicer.

cool and useful, very well

cool and useful, very well done, if ya'd make it nicer it will be perfect! and 4 the matter of the open source is respect that guard your copyrights!! and if you can prove in an official way that you had this program's source before everybody else then you can tell that you have created the program (at least in italy works like that)

I encountered a bug, I made a program with delphi, it's purpose is to start both freepops and thunderbird but when I start it from your shortcut it doesn't work. it was a problem that also the portable apps menu once had, they fixed it in the last beta...
and also you cannot put the shortcut to a folder in your menu, that would be quite usefull

It doesn't need visual appeal. It is meant to be unobtrusive but to be able to have easy launching access to your apps.

I agree that it doesn't need to be supper nice,

But the first one he released just did look good at all (No offense Cypro!). The latest release looks great. It's not annoyingly flashy and constantly grabbing your attention, but it has a nice look to it.

2 issues

The first is that when you add apps to the launcher it doesn't stay centered in the screen. As seen here. Also For some reason a space appears between the edit and the closest shortcut. As seen here

Not Portable

Also I noticed that it's not portable because, even if i added to the shortcut bar only programs from my pendrive, it doesn't change the letter of the shortcuts (4 example from G: to F: )

Source Code

I didn't see a link to the source code. At the moment, you can't self promote applications which aren't available under an OSI-approved license (Free Open Source Software).

Yes that's one of my questions, how can I get an OSI-approved license? I mean, I have written the code and I don't have any problem to upload it here exept that anyone can take it change my name and say that it's his own application. What I have to do to register somewhere my code?

Not really

They can't claim copyright. They have to maintain your copyright within the code whatever OSI license they choose. They also can't claim that they wrote it. In addition, if you choose the GPL license (my recommendation) anyone else is free to modify it, but they are required to release the code back.

Last Request

We're still awaiting the source code released under an OSI approved license. If you're unwilling to do so, you can not promote your application here.

Just pick one

You just have to pick one and release the source code under it. If you wrote it all, you can pick any you like.

The two most popular licenses are GPL and BSD (or MIT/X, which is really the same). The former means anyone is free to use your code but must license their app under the GPL, which means they have to release the source code, too (so you could add their enhancements back into yours). The latter says that anyone can use the source for anything they want, including taking it and using it in a competing commercial product without sharing the changes they made with you.

I recommend the GPL for that reason.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

.

i.e. For the GPL, you'd download License.txt and save that into your project's folder, then add the appropriate header to each of your files.
Then, zip it up and upload the source.

Curious

Can Visual Basic (and DirectX for that matter) programs be licensed under GPL? I thought all linked libraries must be open source (and GPLed)

Hmm?

Tested and...

I've tested it and it seems like a really cool basic app. Considering it's all handwritten, It's a nice little tool for quick launching of your most commonly used app.

The reason I use PStart is because I find PAM and clones very aesthetically appealing but bulky on the screen. With this (providing you change the autorun.inf to include this as well) you could easily have your PAM start minimised and this for quick-launching. I really like it.

I would like to suggest some improvements:
1: Ability to display process name beside the icon. This makes a difference when you have many shortcuts and some icons are similar.

2: Ability to select always on top or not and where it docks on the screen (be it left, right, top or bottom) and whether or not it autohides (much in the same way as the taskbar).

These suggestions are only for improving functionality and usability. As it stands, the app does exactly what it says on the tin and works.

Nice work. Keep it up.

I liked very much your second suggestion and I hope that, soon will be a part of a new version! For the first ability (about the names), I know that it would be very usefull if the names appeared but I wanted to keep the size of the application small and for that reason I choice not to show the names!

What if you made the names apppear in a floating box as you hover the mouse over the icon?

Hey man, great job.

as my thanks, I went over your page and made some spelling and grammar corrections.

I've uploaded the word (.doc) file, so that I could keep the changes I made highlighted so you can find them more easily.

Here it is:

also, I'd suggest that you encrypt your email link, so that it doesn't get into the hands of spammers botting for email addresses. I have used the mailto link generator on the following page with good results:
