Application directory listings (XAMPP) - Opinions?

As part of moving forward, I'm going to begin to add in some of the more-useful portable apps and utilities that are available. I'm planning on keeping a similar app description layout to the existing apps.

The first app I added in is XAMPP, which is a full portable server package (think Apache, mySQL, PHP, FileZilla FTP, mail and anything else you can think of), which I started playing with a little while back after seeing it recommended in a couple blog posts. I did the page layout similar to the other pages. What I'm wondering is... is there anything else someone new to an app might want to know directly on the main page? Is the layout easy to follow? Important info easy to find?

Please have a look and let me know what you think:

I like it but its going to

I like it but its going to be a lot of work if you add more than a dozen programs!

I agree

with Steve, it is going to be alot of work to add in all the information for each app, after about 20 or so, you will probably not want to do it anymore. Smile How about adding some people into help out as application posters of page writers or such. Take some of the work off of your shoulders.

I'll be getting help

Part of the new server is enabling the ability for people to update their own project pages (in the dev section) and, when their app is mature enough for general release, editing their own app listing in the applications directory right here on the site within Drupal. That's why I'm asking about the app pages... I want to make sure they're a complete template moving ahead with this.

I'm still working on getting it all configured properly. I may be stuck having to give developer role accounts full access to the site editing (read: edit every page including the homepage) but approving changes at first and being able to give direct permission on just their own pages later by hacking an existing Drupal module or writing my own.

I'd actually been planning on doing this from the beginning, but one of the modules I was planning on using wasn't what I thought it was and the other was discontinuted. This is actually the first time I've run into something I'd like to accomplish that I haven't been able to in Drupal and it's a tad frustrating.

AV and adware programs

This is not a recommendation for anything specific, just that they're very useful to have and I always have a difficult time finding them when I need them, and end up scouring these forums for links. I've seen them before, someone has come up with a working portable version of Ad-aware, I found a portable version of Spybot S&D, but it was on a foreign-language site, and I'm not sure which AV program I should go with. Versions of Antivir I've found that people have said work seem to get confused when I try to run them.

Any other basic troubleshooting/computer cleaning utilities such as those would be very useful. A zip/Rar/other compression utility would be very good.

And anything that's already portable without even trying, like WinSCP appears to be (though I don't ever save any preferences or sessions with it.)

And that version of Trillian that's been made portable (and non-u3), as long as you're looking to host other peoples' works.

Ad-Aware SE

Ad-Aware by Lavasoft.
Ad-aware is free for non-commericial use!
Download the freeware version of Ad-Aware SE from Lavasoft's website. After installing and updating Ad-Aware copy the files defs.ref and ad-aware.exe to a directory.

PortaServ 2

Soon to be released. It's got Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin and contains config.ini files. It also has special zips with things like CMS's (Drupal, e107, etc) and an FTP server (most likely SlimFTPd). It also has an installer for the special zips, that will unzip exactly to where you want.
Coming Soon...

XAMPP Add-Ons

Why not just make add-ons to XAMPP since it's already portable, stable and has a solid development community that's been working on it for over 2 years and doing Windows, Linux, Mac and Solaris versions? XAMPP already has a portable FTP server built-in (FileZilla). And making add-ons for Drupal, e107, etc wouldn't be too hard. Creating a whole new portable AMPP environment is a bit duplicative, isn't it?

Honey, I shrunk the web server

I personally maintain my own WAMP(P) server for one reason: size.

XAMPP lite is 88Mb unpacked. That's absolutely huge compared to "MicroApache" (~400kb) or a minimal Apache/PHP/MySQL server (~3Mb).

I'm not sure about PortaServ, as that was 30Mb+ last time I looked.

What do you lose?

The question is, what do you lose? What I like about XAMPP Lite is that it's the complete Apache, PHP, mySQL and phpMyAdmin installs... so anything you try and run on it will run without a hitch.

Bloat

I lose Apache/PHP modules I don't use, InnoDB format MySQL tables, perl, webalizer, etc. In other words - all my PHP scripts still work.

Installer...

Hmm, perhaps an installer for XAMPP Lite that allowed you to choose which modules, etc to install (all by default... but fine-grained if you need) would be just the ticket.

A vote for XAMPP

We have been using both XAMPP and XAMPlite for over 2 years and distributing it with anywhere from 6-10 pre configured CMS packages. It is not only very scaleable but also is flexible. Besides their outstanding documentation, track record, a solid user base and updates; what they have is a real understanding of MYSQL, PHP and PERL. When they release a build, all of the components play well in the sandbox.

We regularly test every WAMP that is released along with 30-40 CMS packages. XAMPP has continually been the most stable. Lite also has a management service which is helpful for starting and stopping the servers. Now that Apache does not release ZIP versions (or they are hard to find) XAMPP has the best non-installable build. This is not to say Uniform Server is inferior, just to say that XAMPP is more complete.

XAMPP opinions

First of all a big thanks for the recommendation of XAMPP: in these days I have to work on a project that involves the use of JSP and Tomcat, and I can't imagine a less intrusive way to install a web development platform.

I have just a doubt. The readme file in the root directory of xampp states that you don't have to launch setup_xampp.bat if you plan to install it on a USB stick. I wasn't able to start the platform without using the batch file. Since this site is about Portable Apps, maybe a short How-To about portable use of XAMPP could be helpful.

Are you sure that xampp was copied to the root of your USB stick? e.g. E:\Xampp\ or E:\Xampplite\. I'm pretty sure that this is a requirement.

It works. Sorry... it was my fault I read only half of the readme file ;-).

This mean that I cannot use the tomcat plugin in portable version? It requires to launch a second setup_xampp.bat. Well maybe it is best to ask in XAMPP forum...

Thanks anyway

perl without setup_xampp.bat

xampp is working great but I like to include perl for some development reasons.
On apachefriends.org it is said that to install the perl-addon you have to run the setup_xampp.bat - contrary to "do not run setup_xampp.bat on the stick".
Is there a way to include ther perl-addon without this setup_xampp.bat?
For this a little how-to would be nice and appreciated!
