AbiWord: Open Office compatibility

The blurb for AbiWord says:

Portable AbiWord ... has the ability to read and write a number of document types including Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, OpenOffice.org, RTF, HTML, Palm and more.

I've downloaded it, and it doesn't seem to recognise .odt as an extension. I've tried using "open with" on a .odt file, and also selecting "all files" from the "open" menu in AbiWord itself, but both times it just made it crash. How do you make it open .odt files, if it really can? That's what I've downloaded it for.

Thanks!

It's a plugin

It's currently an add-on plugin. I'm considering adding it in by default in future versions.

please!

I added the ODT plugin as per your instructions and it works great, but it would be even better to have it already in there, kinda like what you did with the Off The Record plugin for Gaim (which was awesome too).

Gonna ask

I'm gonna ask the AbiWord dev team for their thoughts on it. I would assume they're gonna include it by default at some point, too. Maybe Portable AbiWord could be the first test of this.

Re: Gaim OTR, I'm thinking of adding in Gaim-encryption as well so people can securely connect to more folks securely.

If you include the OpenDocument

If you include the OpenDocument plug-in by default, you'll need to package iconv.dll, libgobject-2.0-0.dll, libxml2.dll, intl.dll, libglib-2.0-0.dll, and libgsf-1-1.dll along with it (the plug-in relies on all of them). I'm not sure if space is a concern, but those files take up 2.94MB without any sort of compression applied.

GLib will be a prerequisite for the Windows build come 2.6.0, but that version is far from being released (the currently unreleased 2.5.0 _does_ depend on GLib). Anyway, when this all finally comes together, I'm pretty sure that the WordPerfect, OpenDocument, and OpenWriter plug-ins will be included with the main package instead of a separate one.

Thanks for the heads-up

Thanks for the heads-up. I asked on the AbiWord-dev list to see what others thing. I was aware of those other files and I think at least one of those files compresses... but I remember a couple not liking to be UPXed. I'll play with it a bit and put a test build together for people to try out.
