Forgot password

Attn: Steve Lamerton,

I had encrypted a folder on my usb drive using Toucan 1.1 which contained thousands of images. But now i have forgot the password and i am not able to decrypt the same.

Pls help or advise a workaround as i its a genuine request and those files are important to me.

I think you are SOL

If there was a simple or even complex workaround without entering the password, then it would not be a very good encryption program, would it?

Nothing You Can Do

As wsm23 said, you're SOL (Shit Outta Luck). Good encryption programs encrypt files so you *HAVE* to use the password to decrypt them. So, you can't get them back through any normal means.

You might be able to write a brute force tool to try every single possible password on the files calling BURP (the encryption tool used within Toucan). It would take months to work. And it's not something we can help with.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Look you need to know the 3 impotant B's of computing

and they are: Backup, Backup and Backup! Seriously you really need to backup your files if they are THAT important.

As all of ya should know Micro$oft is the Evil Empire, and Windows (a.k.a. Winblows or Windoze) is their greatest general, so please make a difference and install Linux or FreeBSD on yer Windows comp.

Or use KeePass :D

And two the author. I think the best suggestion is to just try every password you use for normal things.

That's really the lesson...

In our modern IT world you must be able to use a program like KeePass (or RoboForm 2Go) to safely remember your passwords. With either of these programs all you need to remember is one master password and you can "unlock" all of your other passwords.

Just don't lose your master password...

True but RF2G is not portable

It swamps the Registry, I've heard.

Search the forum....

We (this board) had this conversation before. RoboForm 2Go is very clean and doesn't "swamp" the registry. It's as free from stuff left behind as is KeePass. RoboForm is commerical, so it will set you back a few bucks whereas, KeePass is free. I've used both and prefer RoboForm.
