Installer & Destination Folder

Hi!

(first: sorry, if this topic has still been discussed in the forum)
(second: sorry for my english)

Installer:

I was happy with the distribution of the Portable Apps via 7z files.
I think, that a "Portable- Application Installer" is some paradox ...
I just want to expand the package.
probably you call it "PortableApps.com Extractor"

Destination Folder:
the second screen of the Installer let choose the directory for extraction.

There i miss the easy possibility to extract in the same dir of the installer.
one way would be a "just extract" button.
or:
make it possible that i could use ".\" eg.: ".\FileZillaPortable".
(or "..\..\FileZillaPortable") ...
i miss the good old dot *g*

Thanks for your oppinion,
greetings
Hoerby

One of the reasons

for changing the installer from a simple extractor to an actual "installer" was that sometimes files have to be removed before upgrade and that is not possible with a sfx-extractor.
Another reason was that the nsis-installer can copy things around (like copy and modify the old Gaim settings to the new Pidgin location).

Its just that there are some things an installer can do and it would be impossible to do them with a simple extractor.

As for the destination folder:

I like the current setup with the installer automatically choosing the location. It is handy for the majority of people who use the default layout.
For all others, it is a little more to do, and I doubt John will make an extra button cause it adds only a little more functionality but a lot more confusion.

make sense ....

Hi!

you wrote some Points, that i didn't think about ...

I just read:
(at the example of Thunderbird)

Upgrading Thunderbird Portable
To upgrade to a newer version of Thunderbird Portable, just install a new copy of Thunderbird Portable right over your old one. All your data will be preserved.

(I only thought about the old version ...)
