Take the default Autorun.inf file from \PortableApps and copy it to \
Default Autorun.inf looks like this:
[Autorun] Open=PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\PortableAppsMenu.exe Action=Start PortableApps Icon=PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\PortableAppsMenu.exe Label=PortableApps
Now edit \Autorun.inf so it looks like this:
[Autorun] Icon=PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\PortableAppsMenu.exe Label=PortableApps shellexecute=PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\PortableAppsMenu.exe UseAutoPlay=1
Open My Computer, right click on your USB drive letter, click on properties, click the autoplay tab, choose mixed content, and select action to perform, take no action. That should work, but if it doesn't then do the same for every autoplay option in the list.
Some programs change the autoplay options for USB drives, two that I know of are Windows Media Player (turn off sync) and Adobe Photo Album. If you install or update these programs just go back into My Computer and change the autoplay option for your USB back to take no action.
I've done it on XP Home and XP Pro and it worked on both. Let me know how it goes.

PS: I don't know if it makes any difference, but I have formatted this USB in Windows and gotten rid of the sony software it came with. Sony MicroVault 2G, does anyone happen to know if that would make a difference in this process?

I've seen some posts here and there about that. If Autorun is disabled on your school computer I don't think there's anything you can do to make it run other than editing the registry.

because autorun discs that i make run with an autorun script, and the "nag window" will pop-up with the normal autorun script on my flash drive.

Did you try setting them all to take no action? I did that myself but since my mixed content menu was coming up I was hoping that was all, but try setting all options to take no action. If that doesn't work then I'll have to hope someone else comes up with an alternate solution. If I can find multiple people who get this to work I want to make a complete list of actions to take and software that resets the usb so we can have a complete and comprehensive how-to on the subject and we can direct people to it, since so many have this question.
Also I don't have admin rights on the XP Pro box and it did work, even without admin rights.
I would be interested to know if ANYONE besides me got this thing working and if I missed any possible steps in my post.

Well, I did what you said, but it won't remember my auto play settings. When I switch it to mixed content, and take no action, as soon as I hit apply, ok, it switches back to default. Any idea why this is?

I have an admin account on an XP SP2 Home and it doesn't work.
EDIT: Okay, it does work if you take out those spaces. Once I took out the spaces, it worked. So it would be like this:

Automatically Opening Folders
On Windows Me and Windows 2000, Autoplay V1 opens a folder to display the contents of a newly mounted hard disk drive or to display the contents of network drives mapped through the Map Network Drive menu option in Windows. Likewise, if there is an Autorun.INF file on a CD media and the open or ShellExecute command is not specified, Windows will open a folder on the root of the drive. Starting with Windows XP, Autoplay V2 opens a folder following the insertion of media in a CD drive or removable disk drive if it can't find an Autorun.INF file and the Autoplay V2 content sniffing does not find any known content. Content sniffing is new to Autoplay V2 and is explained later in this article. This behavior also applies to removable hard disks, like USB and 1394 hard disks.
According to this the Open command should also work though I haven't tried it.
