U3 Compatability under Vista 32 bit

Hi

Just installed OpenOffice.org U3 2.0.1.0 but this doen't work when my 4GB Cruzer USB pen drive is plugged into a machine running Vista.

The LaunchPad and pen drive firmware is Vista compatabile.

Would it be better to install OpenOffice.org Portable 2.2.1? And is this version U3 compatibile?

Cheers

- The regular versions of

- The regular versions of OOo won't run properly on a USB drive because it still requires registry entries.
- You should be able to use any of the PortableApps at this site on a U3 USB drive, but they are not U3-specific; they will run from ANY USB drive. The current Portable version of OOo should work fine, if Vista is compatible with earlier versions of the OS.
- I can't comment on Vista compatibility since I do not use Vista at all.

Thanks. Downloaded 2.2.1

Thanks.

Downloaded 2.2.1 portable and it installed and ran just fine under Vista.

But as you stated, it's not U3 specific and so can't be added to the LaunchPad. Do you happen to know if a U3 version is on the cards, or am I asking in the wrong place?

Thanks in advance
Hyde.

Nope.

PortableApps.com is officially dropping support for U3 and we aren't developing for the U3 platform any more. U3 itself is being dropped and will no longer be supported soon.
If you really want to add it, we recommend SmithTech's Shortcut Creator 4U3, but this unsupported officially. That said, we can still support it on the forums.

Ah, OK. Thanks for the

Ah, OK.

Thanks for the update. I'm not that joined at the hip to U3 yet for this to be a major issue.

One of the U3 elements I did like was that it left no trace (registry changes, cookies, files, etc. etc.) on the machine the pen drive was plugged into. Is this true of Portable app range too? I did look at the FAQ's but either missed that nuggett, or it isn't covered.

Even more

The PortableApps.com Platform is even more portable than U3.
For the U3 autorun mechanism to work, U3 leaves a small program on every PC you plug it in. PortableApps doesnt do that.
And all PortableApps.com Programs are known&tested to be truly portable; meaning that they dont leave stuff behind and restore the local settings even if the program crashes. The only way you can leave your settings on a PC is if the PC crashes while you use a portable App.
Those standards can not be guaranteed for all U3 apps.

[edit]Feel a right wally now  Just scrolled further down the forum listings and found one for U3! How come the site search didn't pull that up when I entered 'U3' in the search tool? [/edit]

Cause

It only searches "nodes" or content pages, not containers like forums. For an example, see in the URL for this page, it's node 9309.

Understand

Ah, I thought that having gone back to the root of the Forums page that activating Search from there would have provided a cross-container search.

I see the 'Advanced' search page limits you to selecting a particular forum.

Thanks

It does

It searches all nodes. For an example, if you search Firefox, you'll most likely get the Firefox Portable page included in there. What I meant was, it doesn't search the names of containers, cause they don't actually exist as a node, just a category.

Wait, I think I just confused myself Pardon Biggrin

No it doesn't ..

only if you choose to install it...
U3-autorun works because a U3 drive has a CD-ROM device .

Yes it does

If you check your "app data" folder, you will see that U3 installed a program on your computer. It a small app that is used to enable the safe-eject feature that it has.
