I was just about strip all that U3 stuff from my Cruzer pen drive and install PortableApps Suite when I spotted this thread on Office 2007 compatability.
Having followed the link above I only found a thread that rambled on about the merits, or otherwise, of writing stuff that worked with MS products with no real conclusion about whether it would or wouldn't.
Does anyone here have any info on PortableApps Suite v1.0 standard being able to sync with and open/write files in Office 2007 formats?
microsoft word 2001 save in .docx file type. So far as I know openoffice 2.0-2.2 does not open this file type. You'll have to look and find out at the site or try it.
It will open .doc file types.

OpenOffice can not open the Office 2007 format. There is a fork of OpenOffice by Novell that can, but I believe it is not free.

Not that bothered about something being 'free'. If the PortableApps Suite had worked with Office/Outlook 2007 then I'd have been more than happy to make a donation via the links on the PortableApps suite web page. But, I really don't want to be faffing about with another branch of this product, sorry.
Looks like I jumped into this arena on the cusp of U3 being phased out, but not yet mature enough to work with the latest version of the MS suite.
I'll have to patient and wait for the good folk who support this product set to encompass the latest MS suite
The PortableApps suite has ZERO to do with the OpenOffice project making their software be able to import/export the new MS Office 2007 file formats.
People are getting very confused on this issue and trying to "blame" the wrong people. Blame MS if anyone for not using the pre-existing open document standards that are out there.

The Microsoft Office 2007 formats are only fully supported by Microsoft Office 2007. No other software fully supports the format yet... and Microsoft Office 2007 is not portable... at all. Novell is working on a fork of OpenOffice.org with support for it, but it's only in testing right now and the licensing of it is questionable.
This doesn't have anything to do with U3 or any other portable platform as Office 2007 is not portable. You might be able to install it on a virtual machine (like Virtual Box) and have the VM be portable, but I think the End User License Agreement may forbid that now (I know it does for Vista and some other big software packages).
In short, you're FAR better off avoiding MS Office 2007 format as you won't be able to share documents with anybody. If you want to share documents, definitely stick with DOC files for the forseeable future.
If you want a solid, standardized format, (that's also supported by a couple portable apps) then OpenDocument Format is what is recommended. It's supported by OpenOffice.org, Star Office, KOffice, AbiWord, Lotus Symphony (IBM's new office suite), Microsoft Office 2000/XP/2003 (with the ODF Plugin... 2007 will be supported in the next release), Google Apps (their online word processor and spreadsheet), WordPerfect Office (I don't know if they've released the service pack for it or not yet), etc.

I don't need to *share* as such, these documents. But I do need to be able to sync them from my Vista laptop onto the pen drive and open/read/write to them when the pen drive is used on another machine (XP or Vista), and have them sync back to my laptop when I return to it. I also need Outlook 2007 to sync all its data too and once again be able send and receive emails from the pen drive and have all that sync back as I'd like to do with the Office 2007 files.
Currently the U3 CruzerSync software (Dmailer) does this for Office/Outlook 2007, but not under Vista, only XP.
I think you can use CruzerSync after uninstalling U3. Just download it from SanDisk:

DMailer 7 is the one that works on Vista. I think CruzerSync for U3 is an older version (5 or 6). I don't know if it will be updated since U3 is being discontinued next year (and the upgrade price is $20 for existing version 6 users).

Last night I managed to update CruzerSync to 6.3.something and it now works under Vista and syncs Office & Outlook 2007
I don't know which version the pen drive shipped with, or why it didn't advise me that an update was available since the relevant options were selected.
But it works now

1) Visit: http://download.novell.com/SummaryFree.jsp?buildid=ESrjfdE4U58~
and download the .oxt version of the OpenXML converter.
2) Install the portable version of openoffice on your thumb drive.
3) Open Writer (the one on your thumb drive) and from the menu choose "Tools"..."Extension Manager".
4) Click "Add" (My Extensions should be highlighted already)
5) Browse to where you saved the .oxt file and add it.
6) You may get several messages regarding the media type not being supported, just keep clicking "OK" until they go away.
7) That should do it, this worked for me, your mileage may vary!
