DSL Embedded

DSL, or Damn Small Linux can run inside Windows using QEMU. It has several useful apps such as Firefox.

dsl-embedded.zip

Yep: dsl-embedded.zip

That's the Qemu / embedded version (to run DSL from inside Windows or Linux).

SLAX Popcorn Edition

This is a minimalistic OS based on Slackware. It has Terminal, Firefox 1.5, Gaim, MPlayer, Beep-XMMS Audio Player, and AbiWord. It uses XFCE and Fluxbox. There is a way to run it from a USB drive with MySLAX Creator. It is small at 111MB

You know,

we sound like marketers, marketing against each other. Everywhere you suggest SLAX, I suggest Puppy, and vice versa. Smile

I've only used DSL. Can you tell me about SLAX?

I personally prefer KDE to fluxbox. Is there an embedded distro that is relatively small but uses a nicer GUI?

Also, how can I put a password on a DSL user? (i.e., require a password to turn on the DSL "embedded computer")

XFCE

I was actually wrong about SLAX Popcorn Edition, it only uses XFCE, not fluxbox. SLAX Popcorn Edition is really nice looking and quite simple. See my blog for more info. SLAX Standard Edition would be more what you are looking for I think. It's a tried and true KDE OS. It has all the KDE apps you are used to, like KOffice (I like OpenOffice better, but KOffice is cool) and Konqueror (which I do like). The theme of the whole Standard edition is cool looking too.

DSL vs. Slax Popcorn Edition

I've tried both, but I've more experience with DSL, so perhaps my judgement is a little biased.
Anyway Slax has a very cool GUI and it is very easy to install on a USB stick. Just download the iso of the version you prefer and MySlax Creator for Windows.
The application set is richer in DSL with a smaller disk space requirement. Both distribuition are extensible with custom package, besides Slax can be extended with Slackware packages and DSL with Debian. I've never used Slackware, but Debian Packages are defintely useful and easy to use.
DSL can boot from the USB stick and inside QEMU indifferently (the embedded DSL can be booted using syslinux). The oly remark about DSL is that using the provided script to build a bootable USB stick makes it not usable with Windows. The script makes two partition on the stick, one for the OS core and the other for data and extension. Windows is not able to see the second partition.

Can BartPE boot from USB flash drives (UFD)?
Probably. But booting from UFD is not always stable at the moment. It is very dependent on what exact hardware is used. Some bioses cannot be set to the correct emulation and other systems hang or abort when the windows USB drivers are loaded. Tricky stuff, maybe better support in future...
