bookmarks are geting lost randomly

I have been trying to determine what is causing it, but so far, I have failed to do so. Unfortunatelly, I have no extra time to go deeper into this problem and what I got is not enough for a bugzilla report, therefore I decided to at least report it here..

From time to time (aprox. every other day), some of my bookmarks get lost randomly. With no crash experiences, ff is always properly closed before computer shutdown, disk is working fine, etc. However random lines in the bookmarks.html file sometimes change from this:

This weird rubish usually continues over a few original lines. Then the rubish stops and bookmarks continue. The bookmarks.html file size does not change much, but since some parts of the file are replaced with the funny stuff, some of my bookmarks get lost. If I start ff and close it again, the bookmarks.html file is "fixed" by removing all the bad stuff. After a few days without bookmarks restoring, all my bookmarks are reduced into a handful od links.

Since the suff is not proper base64, I assume some buffer is overflowing or the memory is otherwise being corrupted before the bookmarks file is saved.

Installed extensions: Clipping, CSSViewer, DOM Inspector, Html Validator, Mouse Gestures, SearchStatus. All of them updated to latest versions.

Note: I am running the Firefox Portable version from a usb flash disk. The usb is, however, not the problem, because, all my other portable applications work fine. I never unplug the usb before the data are flushed properly, etc.

Any help, suggestions? Please, note that I have already tried to reproduce this for bugzilla filling, therefore, I have already made sure about common things like:
- firefox does not crashes, the problem is elsewhere.
- the usb disk is never being improperly unplugged, the problem is elsewhere.
- the usb disk is not malfunctioning, the problem is elsewhere.

Thanks.

Record width?

I think that might break the record for here.

But why???

Aw come on don't you enjoy having to scroll though miles of gibberish to get to the meaning of the post?

Haha

It was only 56 times the original size of the page. You're right. Smile Scrolling is fun. Specially when you use the button and not the bar. Blum

Hmm

Have you tried using a different drive? It may still be an issue with a sector on your drive, which is why it's not affecting the rest.
Other than that, I'd have to say it's either a buffer overflow or an encoding error of some sort.

A possible workaround

Try having FF stop saving the page's favicon as part of the bookmark. I don't know how to do that, but a guess would be bring up "about:config" and type the word "icon".

The first three listed sound promising:

browser.chrome.favicons
browser.chrome.image_icons.max_size
browser.chrome.site_icons

Try setting the first and last to "False" and maybe the middle one to "zero".

IMO: you can live without favicons if it stops the bookmarks from getting trashed.

EDIT: I confirmed that setting "browser.chrome.site_icons" to "false" stops the icon from being saved as part of the bookmark (prevents favicons from being used period). If that won't work for ya...well...I do solutions, not miracles. Wink

I'll have to try that, I had

I'll have to try that, I had a large chunk disappear and then foxmarks synced it at home so they are lost, hadn't done a backup in a while.
