Would it be possible to make the Menu have the option to not vanish on an app's selection? Some times - most times - it is very useful to be able to open apps in quick succession and not trek to the world's (bottom right) end to find a menu that could be more easily positioned and accessed to suit the user.
I couldn't find a response to the last person who asked this about 5-6 months ago. Is it likely or even possible?
If you use the R30 mod (found in the forums), there is an option to 'Stay Visible'. Since it has been requested many times and since the R30 author is part of the 'official' developmen team now, I would expect the next official release. (I'm using the R30 version which is working fine for me.)
It's officially supported in PortableApps.com Platform 1.1 Beta 4 (what the 'Menu' is called now), here:
https://portableapps.com/node/8450
The checkbox for it isn't in the menu yet, so you just need to add this line to your PortableAppsMenu.ini after you've run the menu once:
RemainVisible=True
You can also adjust the menu's start position. And it supports a hot key (WINDOWS-P) to show or hide the menu. So, you might want to position it in the middle of the screen and then use WINDOWS-P to show/hide it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks, John, for...
...a quick response.
The beta seems to work very well indeed. Would a similar .ini entry to store the last or perhaps a specifically chosen default screen start position be feasible? Or simply a choice of corners or centering? I ask as I use this mostly on a vast 22" screen at 1680x1050 res and its a long way to the corner!
...an excellent product.
This is bound to become a jewel in computing's crown, not to mention a MAJOR Open Source promotion facilitator. It ranks along with Visicalc and Sidekick for cleverness, usefulness and general cuteness. Congratulations!
I am currently using PortableApps as my main app on my desktop to see whether it can be sensibly promoted to new users as a simple way to add the major programs most users would want. I am conscious of the constraints working to maintain simplicity and portability imposes on the product being used this way, e.g. no background AV checking by ClamWin, but think it might well have a future as a PC super-suite. It's a bit like a distro without an OS!
Well done!

Check that post again... there's another INI option for choosing the startup position. Use that for now. In the next release, it's all automatic.
And, yeah, PortableApps.com has been exposing a lot of people to open source who haven't used it much before... and exposed people who do use open source to more of it.
Glad you like it.
