I found this project just now, it's called OpenMoko. They're working on creating a Operating System for phones that's completely open source. I think it's pretty cool. And once it gets out of alpha/beta, I'll probably buy one of the supported phones.

There are quite a few smart phones running linux. I thing palm is one of them.

Palm isn't Linux based yet, some run Windows Mobile and some run a fairly old version of the Palm OS. They are supposed to be moving to Linux though, although they have been saying that for years.
