He didn't ask you to make it portable, Marko, so what you support isn't relevant.
To the OP: I suspect that any Microsoft product would have far too many hooks into the OS to be able to run portably. If it could (and that's a big if) you would need to use a registry wrapper at a minimum.

I'd agree with you if he had asked for someone else to make it portable, but he asked how he would. AFAIK he should be free to make his personal copy of the software portable (although he couldn't legally distribute it). With that in mind, I figured he deserved some general advice on making things portable.
It's been stated many time Microsoft applications are very tied into the system, and therefore very hard to make portable. And if he doesn't have a sinch of developing experience, he's not going to do well. Marko offered and alternative that is open source as well. And I don't think Microsoft's EULA would even allow you to make is use it portably for personal use. Read commercial EULAs especially the one for Windows, it's pretty binding.
MS EULAs State the program must be unstalled to the machine it is to be used on... I cannot be made portable, by ms license policies. Doing so woul dbreak the license agreement.

I think the purpose of those clauses is to prevent installing software to a network drive where multiple users could run it. If it's on a flash drive you could argue that it is "installed" on (and only on) whatever PC that the drive is plugged into.
I wouldn't want to test that in court against MS's lawyers, though.

The link to an article that talks about not supporting closed source or commercial software is in the "Request" forum, which ostensibly is a place to request things be added to the suite.
I don't think we should be specific here (like distributing NSIS source code for a program that would make a certain app portable in violation of its EULA) but wouldn't it be okay to go into general techniques that a person could use to make a launcher for personal use for an app that (we hope) s/he is licensed to use?

But what I do know is making Microsoft applications portable might be against the application's End User License Agreement. MS license usually allows its apps only to be used on one computer, therefore I think it's wise that this site sticks to open source.
But that's just my opinion.
