This isn't specific to PAM, but I don't know where to ask for help. Today, I upgraded to Windows Vista. On it's first run, everything worked fine at first. Then most of my system tray notification icons were gone. The programs were listed as running in task manager. Does anyone know what caused this or how to get them back? (Other then a reboot)
Hmmm. That never happened to me. Try restarting explorer.exe. (Also move this to off topic.)

Sorry, moved it.
I'll try that. I take it this is a bug that Microsoft missed then? Doesn't appear to be any settings so thats the only thing I can think of.
Hmm?

and its not toooooo bad but it is still pretty bad. when microsoft releases SP1 for vista, most of the problems are supposed to go away.

AS my Opinion, not to start any arguments or fights. I use Vista everyday, it is my main system. I use Vista Ultimate, had it since it came out and Enterprise before that. After the initial growing pains of a new OS, I stress OS as all new versions of all OSes (Linux, Mac, Windows, BEos, etc.) have problems, I have been very happy with it, and have had absolutely no problems.
In my opinion, those that say they don't like it or that is sucks, have not spent enough time with it to truly understand and know how it works.
This same problem happen with XP when it came out, noone wanted to switch from 2000 and everyone said xp sucked and would not work, etc. I can't count how many times I heard when xp sp1 comes out it will be better. This is just a rehash of the same conversations and arguments said when xp came out, nothing more...
In a year or so, those who said it sucks or they don't like it, will be saying that Vista is great and that XP is too outdated...
Had to get that off my chest.
Have a good day.

Vista Rules! XP has always given me more trouble than vista.

I won't say your right or wrong, but I will say I was one of those people that badmouthed XP and then loved it later on. (I DO set my desktop to the more uncluttered and less graphical Windows Classic theme in WinXP though) I'm a gamer and XP did NOT play nice with some of the game we played when it came out. SP1 helped smooth that out.

you bolth have valad points. thogh i havent really gotten my hand dirty with vista i can say with 5 years experence that XP has its problems. like the fact that after a while nothing works on xp anymore, gets really slow, issues with updates, MAJOR issues with compatability and the fact that after 5 years, my xp computer has had to undergo 4 windows repairs. i have to clean up the registry every week, and for some reason i mistereously had 10 gigabytes of trash on my computer, mainly the "Compress Old Files" section of the disk. i cleaned it up yesterday and i went from having 7 gigs free to over 15 free and it took ofer an hour o clean it up. not to mention that only 3 minuts was used to clean everything else up. i have had to repair so many invalid registry entries and it gets really annoying after the 7 time in a month.
anyway, adding on, all OSes, not just new ones, will have there issues. and as with the release of all new things, they will have issues, people will hate what ever it is and then they will come to like it.

You are correct... XP Does have its problems. That has been the case since Windows 1.0, and Linux 1.0. and BeOS 1.0 etc.... All OSes will have problems no matter what...
I have been in IT and worked with various OSes from 1995, and all have the same problems over and over again.
I personally take into account all peoples opinions on what they think of a new software version or OS version, and always try to understand their point of view. It is when I hear those people who have just read the reviews on it or played for 5 mins with it, make an opinion on it, and then trash it, (OS or New Software) before they even use it... It just makes that person ignorant.. (This is not pointed at anyone here or anyone specific, Just a viewpoint).
It just causes problems in places like this where you get the fan boys/girls and the naysayers and it goes off into the untold world of baseless accusations and so called facts. Digg.com is a great place to start on of these kinds of fights, post one thing about Vista and the comments fights begin....
I have in my job many who naysay, and shown that more than half the people who put down vista or Linux, etc., have used either system for approximately 20 mins. When they get to that point they get mad at something, and then all they do from that point on is find bad stuff to point out. But that is neither here nor there, just giving a little background on where i am coming form..
It just annoys me thats all, give the item a bit of a chance before killing it, ya know...??
OK, I am done.

I said this same thing a while back but here it goes again. Different people use different programs for different reasons. Not everybody can/should use Linux, or Vista for that matter.
I personally like Linux, although I use XP (when I have to, aka, at work). And I've come to realize that no matter how much I want to get away from XP or windows in general, I just can't. I use Autocad and so far I have not found any alternative that works as good as Autocad to use in Linux. Therefore, no matter what I do, I will still need Windows (XP now, Vista later) to run Autocad.
Also, there are LOTS of people who just want to dial a number and have someone from the other end tell them how to fix their problem without having to search for the solution, that's something that Microsoft has.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that Linux is not for everybody, specially right now. Non techy people should just stick with Windows.

I am not sure why this would hapen, but aside from checking to make sure that each progrma has it icon turned on, a possible reinstall of each app might help.... Just back the settings of each anad reinstall...
If that is not the way you want to go, head ove to the MS knowledge base and look in there...
Sorry I can;t be of much help, I have not had or seen this problem...

there might be a setting in the controll panel that sets the icons to display or not to. i know that this is the case with the desktop and the start menu so maybe it goes for the sys tray. first try to right click the taskbar and go to properties, then (since i am not eXPerenced with vista) try to find a tab or menu that sets the display icons, ifd there isnt something like that or it doesent work, try to find something related to the system tray or icons in the controll panel and fiddle around a bit.
i will submit a case to microsoft and see what i get. (cause they really listen to me. i have submitted like 34 case issues with XP and they were major ones.) if microsoft comes up with notheing then i will search the knowlage base.
my mom is having a similar problem in her computer, but vista only display some of the icons and not all of them.
