Anyone know how to make the Windows Media Player plugin from http://port25.technet.com/videos/downloads/wmpfirefoxplugin.exe install on portable Firefox? It is an exe file and apparently expects to find Firefox via registry entries. The install runs but the plugin does not show up.

I doubt it uses the registry. It tries to find it at %programfiles%\Mozilla\firefox. This is the same reason the Windows verification plugin doesn't work with FxP.
Vintage!
The next step-by-step works on my config:
I have FF 2.0.0.8 installed on the PC in its default location (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins) and wanted to install the plugin in FFPE.
1) Run the installer for the plugin (i downloaded at http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-down...) ... this will install it in the "normal" version.
2) Close FFPE.
3) Copy the dll from the "normal" FF to FFPE (i.c. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\np-mswmp.dll --> \PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins).
4) Done!
btw: this copy&paste workaround seems to work in several cases
btw2: i know this is a rather late reply but maybe someone can use it in the future ...
working perfectly. Thanks!
I didn't know this... now I copied the entire plugins dir (plugins for divx, qt, etc...) let's see if its works...
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
