Please Don't Ask

As stated many times before, please don't ask about updates.

But I can correct your sentece.

There will be a portable version in the near future. Smile

Unfortunately the main developer has a lot of other applications to update and things to do.

Localization

Actually, we really need some help with localization of the strings from the installer (since GIMP is a multilingual app). There's a thread about it in the Localization forum.

But as far as when it's done... don't ask. The answer is always the same:

It's done when it's done™

Trademark Infringement?

Looking at the last line of your post… I thought that was 3D Realm's trademark (will Duke Nukem Forever ever come out?). Shouldn't you have a disclaimer or something for that? Blum

Looks very promising, but miss pre-XP support

I'd love to give this a spin, especially when the portable version comes out (I'll be patient)... but the loss of pre-XP support is a bit of a bummer as there a few computers I use that aren't running XP or Vista.

Runs fine on w2k

It runs fine on W2k. I've been running development builds for quite a while. Have even slipped them into the Portable Apps launchers. If you want to give it a try, just download the latest Ubuntu Live CD. It contains 2.4.0-RC3, and Ubuntu doesn't usually ship Release Candidates! Try it, you just may like it too!

I've been using GIMP portable on Windows 2000 just fine. I don't want them to stop that support. Even though I first used GIMP under my linux OS, I like the convenience of having GIMP all over.

Teddy, As of this morning,

Teddy,

As of this morning, GIMP 2.40 for Windows isn't on the Windows installers website yet! Asking for the PORTABLE version before the non-portable version is generally available isn't going to make friends and influence people in your favor.

Maybe it is time for you to move to Linux?

check again

alanbcohen, as of yesterday at about 5PM gimp 2.4 for windows was available because I downloaded it. I also double checked it this morning and again downloaded it.
while I agree that asking for portable apps immediately after the release of the "standard" app isn't going to make friends fast, you should double check your facts before making statements.

I downloaded it from the

I downloaded it from the SourceForge page too, this morning. But, I was referring to the Windows Installer pages that are referenced on the GIMP.org website. Most non-geeks aren't experienced enough to know the difference.

Weird

Thats odd because I googled Gimp to find gimp.org and clicked on the link provided which took me to the sourceforge page.

This is the page referenced

This is the page referenced from the Windows Installer page:

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Still points to 2.2.17 as the most recent stable Windows version.

May be when you made your post…

But check again now. I'm looking right at it in another FF tab (gotta love Firefox) and right at the top, plain as day, is the 2.4.0 version (a 14602 kB d/l).

Saw it, like it, can't wait

GIMP 2.4 came bundled with my Ubuntu upgrade on my Linux box.
There's a reason why it is a 0.2 version upgrade from the last one...
It's got a lot of improvements, and it's a lot more intuitive to work with.

I like it so much more than 2.2, I find I'm preferring to do my GIMP-work on my Ubuntu system.
Unfortunately, I also need to use GIMP off of my flash drive on other Windows systems, so I'm patiently waiting for the new PA release.

In my own mind, this is more important than either the OOo 2.3 or the Portable Apps Platform 1.1; whether it make a difference in prioritizing these projects, I don't know, but that's my 2 cents.

WinPenPack

has it among other things like OOo 2.3 if you just gotta have it (and can put up with their incredibly annoying popup ringtone, etc. ads) otherwise...

Any progress on this?

I know there are a lot of apps in the chute, but this is the most significant upgrade to GIMP in a long, long, long time.
It's up to version 2.4.3.

Any chance of a timeline on this?

Proabably Not

I agree it's probably one of the apps that has a better reason to be upgraded, but we'll still just have to wait. Smile

Well, I just saw this

Well, I just saw this thread, and after doing a little research I'm making my own portable Gimp 2.4.

So far I've used UPX to compress the .exe and .dll files as described in the Portable Gimp site, which cut the file sizes down quite a bit, but still leaves the size at about 98MB compared to the 18MB in the curent official Portable release (I'm new to this so I don't know all the little tricks of the trade). Since this is for my own use at this point, I'll probably cut out all of the other language files that are there too.

If someone who is a little more experienced at making non-portable apps portable has more suggestions, I'm more than willing to listen.
