Anyone know of a simple Explorer replacement? When I say simple, I mean a Open dialog style one. For browsing files, I currently open Notepad++ and click File » Open to do it.
I'm planning to make a portable version of it, because it would so totally be better than using normal Explorer. If one doesn't exist, I might make one myself.
How about a Portable Total commander... though I am not really sure if its open Source...
EDIT: its a shareware... not free... bad trip! this might be a good idea afterall... making a new one... hope you can keep me posted as well...
thanks!
try out ultra explorer its portable get it at http://ultraexplorer.mustangpeak.net/

I'm a fan of this freeware app. There is a full version that is shareware. There are options you need to set in the Preferences/Options to make it stealthier. It will save last directory and views otherwise. And, you can choose dual or single pane displays from the menus on an interactive basis, if that is important to you.
I made a portable version of this a while ago with the authors permission.
you can get it Here

I am trying out the Total Commander right now... This thread made me realize how important is an explorer which you can carry around that is easy to use, and that is not bloated like M$ have...
But I am downloading right now UlraExplorer... Will be posting my experience...
^_-
Maybe we could come up with a launcher for Explorer that removes all the shell extensions we don't want ... then it wouldn't be as bloated at all, and would be a lot safer when running on someone else's machine with who knows what garbage loaded.
We could put them all back, of course...

Ryan, on SF I believe their in a discontinued clone called "Mad Commander" or is it "Midnight Commander"? Or is their two?
Midnight Commander is a ASCII program to manage files and folders. I have it on my Linux live CD. Have no idea on Mad Commander.
None of these are simple enough! I don't want fancy features, I just want something simple!
Maybe I'll just use Notepad++ Portable

If you want simple and small, there is an old(er) shareware DOS app called List by V. Buerg that had a file manager and a text/hex/ascii viewer. His website is still up at www.buerg.com. I don't know if he still charges for his software, but back then, it was the best!
One of the dangers of using a text editor for this purpose is that it is too easy to make a mistake and change a file by accident.
If you are going to consider using a text editor as a browser, maybe you should consider one with a read-only switch (like VIM). If you use GVIM from the read-only icon, you can't accidentally change the file.
Would 7zip work? I think it has a file management function in it also.
Good point. It's nice and simple.

MISIIM is developing Xenon Portable, a simple files browser. I use it on my pen drive and it works perfectly. It has options for icons, default applications to launch, a nice and simple toolbar. I can't believe that none of you remembered that.
maybe Xenon is not "light" enough for Ryan...
I want something simple. Little or no interface other than the file listing.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Do you prefer GUI over ASCII? This question will limit the several managements out there.
But I give up. Notepad++'s file-open dialog will do just fine for me.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
If that's the case I could just whip up an autoit script that uses a standard open file dialog.

Although both yours and Steve's are good, I don't particularly like the wxWidgets interface.
As I have no knowledge of AutoIt, do you think you'd be able to add a folder icon?

I think I actually prefer the generic AutoIt icon anyway. Thanks MISIIM

Is it possible to make it so that you can select multiple files?

Yeah it would be. I'll post back in the next few.

Why don't you make a permanent home for this? I will make good use of this once I find my iPod USB cable...
this is about as simple as you can get, it'll launch files and rename them and absolutely nothing else as it is being used for my latest project and doesn't need any other features, however if anyone actually wanted to use it I could add some more.

@MISIIM
Could you post the code you used for your AutoIt script? The link is dead.
I just started learning AutoIt, and the first script I did was to recreate what you've done (neat idea, btw). Mine's done and working for single or multiple files, with folder icon (LOL).
I just wanted to compare it to what you did to see if there was somewhere I could improve upon it. Thanks if you don't mind!
Mini Xenon
how come you did not use this?
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
Thanks! I didn't even know it made it into an actual release.
