Not finding Extensions

Help!!

I installed the updates to firefox 1.5.0.1 when I received and upgrade notice. Now I don't have accessed to my extensions or themes. I can see them when I click on Tools->Extensions/Themes but they are ghosted out with a message that says I need to restart firefox. I've restarted FF several time but I still can't get the extensions or themes to become active.

What is the trick to fix this???

Thanks

The Firefox process may not be completely closing--it tends to do this from time to time. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and kill the firefox.exe process, then start Firefox again. That should fix it.

Tried It

I still see the extensions and themes but they all show that I need to restart PFF to get them active. I even did a cold boot.

Corrupt profile?

Hmm. May be a corrupt profile. Get a fresh copy of Portable Firefox (PFF 1.5.0.1 has been officially released, so you might want to download that) and reinstall all your extensions. You can copy bookmarks.html from your old copy to the new one if you have a lot of bookmarks.

Something else

There has to be something else other then the profile. I reloaded the original PFF 1.5.0.0 and everything works fine. I've downloaded the new version installed it and moved my profiles and plugins into the PortableFirefox folder and clicked on PortableFirefox.exe, the extensions are there the themes are there. No matter how many times I reloaded PFF I get the ghosted extentions and themes stating that I need to restart PFF. This is getting to be a pain.

What extensions?

And version numbers please. It might be that they aren't compatible with 1.5 or the update might have stuffed up.

Versions

I went from 1.5.0.0 to 1.5.0.1

I did an update on the extensions and none showed they were not compatable. Is there another file involved in controlling the themes and extentions?

Thanks

Your profile is probably corrupt. Don't argue with me here; like I said, try a clean install of 1.5.0.1 (you can download it from here) and reinstall all your extensions and themes manually. Don't try copying your existing profile to the new copy of PFF (except for your bookmarks.html if you want).

Did it

I reinstalled PFF and moved my bookmarks to the profile folder. I added the extensions back in that I use. Then I restarted PFF and clicked on Tools->Extension, I can see the extensions, they are not ghosted out but still has the messages that I need to restart PFF before the extension can be used. I did the restart and did a cold boot and still nothing. I even clear the cache and cookies. I don't know what else to do. What is the next thing to try?

Try this

When you added the extensions back in, did you copy the folder or install them from the web?

Here's what you should do:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and make sure Firefox.exe is NOT running. If it is, reboot your computer
  • Download and extract PFF 1.5.0.1
  • Copy bookmarks.html over to your new PFF
  • Open PFF and download the XPI files for your extensions -- DON'T install them from the web
  • Open the Extensions window
  • Drag all the extension files onto the Extensions window
  • Restart Firefox.

Your extensions should work after that. Remember, DO NOT copy ANYTHING from your previous install.

Extensions Problems

I tried this technique personally, so it should work:
--extract the portable firefox from a zipped download
--install the portable firefox on your desktop: e.g. home PC
--delete the folder called "profile" in portable firefox
--copy the folder called "profile" from the Portable Firefox ON YOUR THUMB DRIVE
--paste it into the PFF on desktop
--start PFF: Should work--> Now copy and paste the PFF from desktop into your THUMB DRIVE

=====================
Summary
====================
Basically to create a clone PFF on your desktop,
then take the "profile" folder from the malfunctioning PFF on your own thumb drive, and put it into the folder on desktop

Speculation: I think that our thumbdrive desn't have enough working memoery or space to install all the extensions so that's why on a PC desktop, it works.
