Well,

I've used them all except ASuite at some point, but currently I'm using MOD R31.

is actually a mod of a mod. Xrxca's been gone for a while, so SmithTech updated it to R31. Here's your link.

Primarily PStart

PStart is my primary menu, but I also use Executor by Martin Bresson which is a Freeware Run Dialog replacement.

ASuite

I abandoned PStart due to too many corrupt settings files. I am now using ASuite 1.5a2 as my everyday menu. It is small and very customizable.

Cheers.

Tried the original PAM, found it to be a waste of space.
Will wait for PAM/PAE 1.5.785.921.24 RC451c before I give it another try Blum

Actually, I will use PStart on occasion for "deep" directory transversing, but that's about it.

It's the apps I want, menus I find to be kind of foo foo, and definitely a waste of development time and resources,

but to each their own Smile

None of the above

I navigate to and double click on the individual app launchers and don't use a menu. My Run menu is full of them so I just have to do Start -> Run -> Down arrow until it appears or use the mouse to scroll thru the picklist.

PortableApps Menu (plus a drupal question)

Does Drupal have an official poll function? Like we choose a radio button to submit our choice and it automatically tabulates it?

AFAIK, Drupal doesn't have a polling feature.

PStart

since version 1.x never had any problems with it, even run it all the time as my desktop launcher. Have shortcuts to programs, folders, often used files, etc. I don't care for the real estate taken or the graphics of PAM. Tried all of the others, like many of them including SmithTech and ASuite, but been using PStart for a long time, no complaints, no compelling reason to switch.

one for different things

I've tried them all...(or so I think)

PAM - good + pretty, but restrictive (won't move, won't rename, etc.etc.)

PAM mod's, Smith's, Rxx - all add more to the "original" but are usually not complete. every one has it's strenghts and missing features.

PStart - not bad but incomplete..

Asuite - maybe the most complete/versatile one. I dont even use the menu itself, but the start window only with custom background and treeview..

others - not worth serious toughts.

I think the better question is : What do you want to see in a Menu for Portable Apps.

Here is what I want:
As much as possible customisation!
Colors/Themes,
Rename of shortcuts/programs,
Use of Custom Logos,
Custom SIZE Menu (PAM is too large for me...),
May be Custom "universal" config file. In other words, if you want the "close" button to be at top left, so be it.
Possibility to rename shortcuts,
choose custom relative paths with any file or directory (not just *.exe or *.paf.exe),
change icons for the shortcuts,
may be bether general help too...

Available In

I'm lost, pretty much all of what you are asking for is available in several of the menu's/MOD's

>>As much as possible customization
The MOD's are very customizable, what more do you want?

>>Colors/Themes
Again the MOD's have the ability to change colors/themes.

>>Rename of shortcuts/programs
PStart, ASuite, SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others

>>Use of Custom Logos
SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others.

>>Custom SIZE Menu (PAM is too large for me...)
The MOD's can do custom sizing

>>May be Custom "universal" config file. In other words, if you want the "close" button to be at top left, so be it.
Not sure what you mean here but the close button can be moved in the MOD's using a theme.

>>Possibility to rename shortcuts,
I believe your repeating yourself with this one.

>>choose custom relative paths with any file or directory (not just *.exe or *.paf.exe),
PStart, ASuite, SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others.

>>change icons for the shortcuts,
SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others.

>>may be bether general help too...
plenty of help can usually be found in the forums, I am working on putting together a help file for my menu, as I am sure is John for PAM.

Not sure what you mean here but the close button can be moved in the MOD's using a theme.

I think he means he'd want to be able to designate a position for the close button independent of what theme was being used. It would substitute that position for the one designated in the theme.ini. A really impractical idea that would just screw up the looks of most themes unless he can convince every theme designer to design themes that would allow for the button to be placed where he wants it.

A better idea would be to modify the themes to your personal preference or just make your own...

Not what I meant...

>>I'm lost, pretty much all of what you are asking for is available in several of the menu's/MOD's

That's not what I meant... I've said "May be the better question is What you Want to See in a PAppMenu?" And I've listed some options...This is not to say those aren't available in some menus. It was more of a suggestion rather that criticism.

>>>>As much as possible customization
>>The MOD's are very customizable, what more do you want?
More is a never ending thing...:-)

>>>>Colors/Themes
>>Again the MOD's have the ability to change colors/themes.
Well then, keep the good work...

>>>>Rename of shortcuts/programs
>>PStart, ASuite, SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others
Again...

>>>>Use of Custom Logos
>>SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others.
ASuite...

>>>>Custom SIZE Menu (PAM is too large for me...)
>>The MOD's can do custom sizing.
Well, I've failed to do it correctly with yours or PAM. Maybe because not all options are in the configs? (with some explanation of what they do...)

>>>>May be Custom "universal" config file. In other words, if you want the "close" button to be at top left, so be it.
>>Not sure what you mean here but the close button can be moved in the MOD's using a theme.
I've managed to move it...but the actual "button" function stayed where it was before. again don't know how to...and not much time to look around...

>>>>Possibility to rename shortcuts,
>>I believe your repeating yourself with this one.
I believe so too...:-)) Sorry about that.

>>>>choose custom relative paths with any file or directory (not just *.exe or *.paf.exe),
>>PStart, ASuite, SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others.
ok it was a general "to have" suggestion...

>>>>change icons for the shortcuts,
>>SmithTech Portable Menu, not sure about the others.
ASuite, Pstart...

>>>>may be bether general help too...
>>plenty of help can usually be found in the forums, I am working on putting together a help file for my menu, as I am sure is John for PAM.

Imagine this...Someone downloads (any)Menu from a "remote site" because he needs what the program says it can do. And then, aside from geting it started...can not make it do what he wants because there is no help at all. So, he will either throw the "think" away (even if it's perfectly capable...) or he'll go back to the net to look for help.
How would you like to spend hours digging in forums and looking for something you don't fully understand.(like how to edit config.ini).
The reason Bill G. is soooo rich is because he (well...) did something MOST people found easy to use, with some use of "intuition". MOST people only know about 10% of how make full use of a PC.
Clicking on a Icon and choosing from a list is way easier than editing a file...(for most people that is)
So DO that Help file! and keep the good work Smile

Except for the "close" button (because PStart doesn't have one) what in this list can't PStart do? Also, what are "Custom Logos" since it seems they're not the same thing as program icons...?

Like someone else mentioned, I love PStart's autorun feature for launching my Cryptainer drive (except they mentioned TrueCrypt), as well as KeePass and some system tools. I also am very impressed with other advanced features. I also use it to run some cleanup routines when I close PStart.

I've had PStart break its config file only once and that was probably my own fault for being in a hurry. Other than that once, it's been steady as a rock. Also, the config file was easy to fix because I back up my USB drive regularly.

Cheers!

Rarely Use Any

I have about 5 flash drives now, a Kingston, Corsair, Sony, Sandisk, and a Lexar, I rarely use any menu, but I use the PAM Mod on my Kingston, then I have the PAPlatform on a couple of the other drives.

Um, what?...

...how exactly can one have "about" 5 drives?...

Do you have 4.5, 4.02569, 5.374 drives, or what?...

And, which of the drive brands you listed is the 0.5, 0.02569, or 1.374 portion of the 'about' 5 you mention?...

Normally just the PA menu

PortableApps Menu (Mostly) - I don't like the part that there arent any sub-menu's available. The list with apps is becoming very long.

PortableApps Menu MOD R3x - (Havent looked at it but seems promising) Many of its functions should be in the official one I think.

SmithTech Portable Menu - (Nice menu, just UPX the exe Wink Don't like I have to add all PA links manually. I like how I can add my own title! Weird however your menu relies on th PAM menu for some things.

Geekmenu - Has some cool features I read.

ASuite & PStart - Looked at them and dismissed them both. PStart did some unwanted things I remember, but can't remember excactly what.

Other - please specify - What others Biggrin

I like there are some different menu's to choose from, all with their con's and pro's. But deeply inside I would love to see one uber menu to rule them all, like having the best of all worlds and highly configurable.

The things I miss the most in PAM:
- Sub categories for your apps.
- Own title/name in the menu replacing the Portable Apps Menu.
- Way to password protect certain things.

If I ever gonna make a menu I name the executable start.exe Smile

Many menus mentioned use PA itself, but some lack the complete install and it works. FE. I tried installing SmithTechPM but it installed itself inside the PA folder structure in essence mussing a way to start it from the rot of the drive, unless you take it out and then you have additional folders (the data folder). Did I somehow miss something here?

I'm still undecided

I have currently been using PStart for quite some time now. (I like it cause It's small, and easy on the eyes.

I tried ASuite, cause I thought it might be better, but It ended up adding all these folders to the root of my drive, which I try to keep clean.

However, I may stay with PStart.
I'd love it if SOMEONE *hint hint* could make a skinnable PStart.
(It just looks too cool with my Visual Style, that I want to see it like that all the time.)

Qsel and Launchy

Qsel is a fast minimalistic launch-pad, tiny footprint >90 kb, plus approx 100 kb of ini-type settings files and my home-made dll of custom icons. It launches apps, files, folders, urls, email addresses. It uses discrete child windows instead of cascading menus, which I find easier to deal with, and has some nice configuration options. No eye-candy, just convenience. I've been using it for 8 months now and luv it.
http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/wpop.htm

I just started trying out Launchy, it's sort of a "Run" clone, runs in the background, and you start it by hitting Alt + spacebar, and start typing the first letters of the app or doc you want to open, and it narrows down the list until you can choose what you want.
Lots of user-made plugins, and a ton of tricks it can do, I haven't even begun to learn them yet. It's wonderful if you like to use keyboard instead of mouse.

PortableApps Menu MOD R3x. I

PortableApps Menu MOD R3x. I like some of the features in the standard PortableApps menu, but I absolutely need to have a grouping system for the programs (I have 30-40 portable apps that I use all the time).

I am a SysAdmin, so I frequently work from different machines, and having almost everything I use on a daily basis running from a USB drive makes life much easier.

I would love to see the standard PortableApps menu get the extra features from Mod R3x, as those features make using the menu SO much better.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed to these projects, as I would not be able to do my job as well nor as quickly as I can with them.

Currently PStart

Currently use PStart for its Autorun feature and Environmental Variables feature, plus the ability to have submenus, notes, and all that it does.

I did try to use PAM but to bland, except for the eyecandy.

For instance I use PStart on My External 2.5" drive. When pluged in it launches PStart then, PStart will autorun Jajuk and a batch file that I created to register an AudioShell extension so I can change the tags of songs. Plus I use the autorun feature when PStart to close to unload the Jajuk and anything else I need it too, using a batch file.

The Environmental variables are great when I needed to set variables

I am going to try some other that where listed here and will report back

I prefer features over eyecandy any day.

PStart

I have 4 PDrives, one is a U3 and of course it have the U3 launcher, but I almost don't use it, just for work stuff because of the password.

I use another one only with security stuff (ClamWin, Spybot, Tweak UI, etc) that one have ToolBox.

Another one just have music and podcasts so it doesn't have a launcher, just the podcast downloader (autorun).

And the main one, the one that I use every single day of my life, have PStart... I have to say I also want to see the ability to skin PStart.

I admit I never have tried a PAM Mod, but I should someday... Wink

uh! and I used to run 8start together with Pstart, but due to a lot of alarms from ClamWin I quit using it.

My first launcher was RK Launcher, but then I discovered PAM and switched... until I found PStart.

I tried ASuite also, but to me it looks ugly, and eye candy is also important for me (that's why I like PAM and someday I'm going to try a mod).

I like Pstart because of autostart on start and on exit and because of the notes, folders, organization, customization... I use PNotes but just for smaller ones, the largest are on PStart notes which have a lot more space than PNotes and a remember feature...

The only stuff I don't like on PStart is "Search" never used it and I think is a waste of space but... I still prefer PStart... Wink

I tried

Mod R3x and SmithTech's Mod today and I have to say that both looks nice, but some options in one are not seen in the other one... I saw some place that both were going to work in the new PAM, so I prefer, until they release a new combined option, to continue using PStart.

RK Launcher, however...

I'm using RK Launcher right now, but would love to use a PortableApps.
SmithTech Portable Menu is the best pick so far. If it would only let you select a folder(Document, Pictures, Music, Video) that is in a true crypt volume or another drive it would be perfect, plus some instructions for "substitute drive" and
arguments would be helpful.

just PAM or Windows Start Menu, but looking to switch

I use my hard drive more often than my flash drive, so I use Start Menu links (which are automatically indexed by Launchy). I would like to use PAM (it's pretty, and I like using the default when possible), but I rarely do. The main reason is this limitation of PAM: you can't create (relative path) shortcuts to the executables. Also, you can't rename their labels. I use a LOT of no-install-required (i.e. semi-portable) programs, organized into folders and subfolders. So, I'm looking forward to trying one of the alternatives mentioned above. -Jon

.03

So far I've tested:
PAM 1.0.2.4
PAM R30 by XrX
PAM R31 Draggable
SmithTech 1.1.0.6
Geek Menu 1.2.4
PStart

I have to say this is getting to be the biggest gump of goo I've seen in a bit. You know the commercial where all the people are on the tennis court. "and no one wins"? That is getting to be this issue:

PAM 1.0.2.4 - Works fine... Boring.

PStart - loaded and unloaded. Not what I'm looking for.

PAM R30 - Used just long enough to LOVE the draggable and move up to R31

PAM R31 Draggable - LOVE this menu. This was my first real menu used daily, learned how to add my own apps, custom "minimize" and "Eject" buttons added, relocated the Drive slider/text. Works GREAT, but is missing the TrueCrypt integration. Therefore, INCOMPLETE.
Rank 2nd

SmithTech 1.1.0.6 - Not bad. "Start Button" is unneeded fluff. "Folder Options" are great, but I have "Documents" in my PA Structure and in my encrypted drive, so the need to add/label/path my own folders is missing. The "Applications" tab works well and the "AutoRun" feature is nice. The "TrueCrypt Options" tab needs more function and never remembers the drive letter I place in it. Most of all I just can't custom theme it as well as R31.
Rank 3rd

Geek Menu 1.2.4.0 Works well, but "Way, WAY TOO MUCH FLUFF and missing meat".

FLUFF: Ok EVERYBODY haasss a searchbar. IE has a search bar, Firefox has a searchbar, Yahoo, Google, etc. I don't need another freakin search bar on my PA menu!!! Especially if you're not going to let me choose the app it launches. "Show Personal Picture" is a smilie. No thanks, fluff again, and no directions to change to a real pic that I wouldn't use anyway. "Owner Info" What good is that? "TrueCrypt" tab doesn't work with my encrypted PARTITION and MULTIPLE
Keyfiles (4). "Custom Buttons" I thought that was the missing function from SmithTech, but it has yet to ever save that info or add the custom folders to the menu. Same with "AutoRun". "Shortcuts" work correctly, but SmithTech is better. "Eject" has yet to be used, but is set up. "Integration" is more unused FLUFF. DOn't get it... No documentation. "Advanced" is nice.

Good Stuff: Known Computers and how TrueCrypt mounts. Nice. Wish it worked with Partitions. MIN/MAX App Buttons to Show. Nice. "Explore folders with custom app..:" Nice, but doesn't work with command line switches.
Rank 1st

So, until a standard is established I'd have to say I want the ease to mod of the R31 theme structure with "Close" "Minimize" and "Eject" buttons.
An Eject script or EXE that works well.
Geek Menu's "Menu" tab (Remove the personal pic and owner info areas)
Geek Menu's "TrueCrypt" tab working correctly with partition volumes and multiple keyfiles.
SmithTech's "Applications" Tab. No changes... Beautiful work.
SmithTech's "Folder Options" tab with added ability to add custom folders and path/icon correctly.

Excellent post. I have only tested half of the menus that you have, but your philosophy/desires for a menu mirror my own. Hope your suggestions are followed.

Geek 1.3.4.0 won

I finally ended up with and stayed with geekmenu 1.3.X.X

Turned off the custom pic and found out how to change the icon.
I launch TC6.1, KeePass, geek, and FFP3.04 from a script so, I "Assume TC mounted if drive letter present"
Still wish the search bar would just GO AWAY!
Additional folders have been added for docs and downloads on unencrypted and encrypted drives
Most of my apps are in 13 folders (with a work around to place the folders first: "-FolderName")
Running my own blacked out theme
Added shortcuts to basic windows functions: LockXP, LogOffXP, RestartXP, Eject, Mute, CALC, Device Manager, Show Desktop, Windows Explorer, etc.

Works great!!!

PAM, 8Start and Toolbox

On my flash drives, I use the latest release of PAM, and Toolbox.
PAM keeps things simple, and I can configure Toolbox to behave like a replacement desktop.

At home I put my second-string apps into 8Start - it's a funky little menu that is very customizable; it supports relative paths, custom shortcuts and icons, shortcuts to any type of file, 3 levels of organization, skins, and coming soon, sticky-notes.

I used to play a lot more with themes and customization, but lately I've stopped changing them, because I am spending so much time actually using all the great apps Smile

I use

to be an 8start user, but clamwin detected it all the time as a trojan and deleting the exe file (my clamwin is in "delete" by default) so I quit using it... Sad

It is nice and pretty, but I don't trust it...

Really?

Neither McAfee nor Avast! detect any trojan with it.
It's a great program, and I have a hard time believing that there is anything wrong with it.
It's probably a bug in ClamWin.
I contacted the author and told him about your issue, so maybe he can fix it.

I've just moved from PAM to

I've just moved from PAM to ASuite since it has a fast start-up and good control over the menu structure. The 'second pane' option for displaying auxilliary info is handy(I've got so many portable utilities that, sometimes, I need a prompt to remember what a particular one does!). Also, the Software Group option (select it and it opens all apps which you've defined as part of the group) is an absolute cracker of an idea.

Being a loyal Portable Apper (John - no kudos is too great for all the effort you've put into pushing the idea of 'proper' portable code ), I'll be back to PAM when 1.5 comes out. In the meantime, if you hadn't considered the idea of implementing Software groups or similar......

Simon

PS; and if there was an option to import the ASuite XML menu structure.... Smile

Launchy

I use launchy on my 1GB truecrypt volume with my portableapps always mounted to z:\ then have it set to catalog z:\ 2 levels deep for exe's (that way it will find "z:\portableapps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe" and not "z:\portable\portaable\FirefoxPortable\app\firefox\firefox.exe")

TypeandRun

I use TypeAndRun. ctrl-shift-r to bring up the command box, then any alias I have set for my applications, enter. And they launch right up. It can apply start in folder and accepts arguments for the programs. I find it easier since I ususally use a laptop for my stuff and moving my hands form the home keys is necessary for the mouse operation. This way I don't have to move them much at all.

Incidentally I'd really like to see an nsis launcher made for it, I'm pretty sure all my settings are saved, but I'm also pretty sure it's putting some stuff in the registry as a system extension, which I would like to stop if possible. It's not open source though unfortunately.

PStart

I formerly used the U3 launchpad but after I found out about the files that it left behind, I used PStart. I like it because its quick, simple, and you don't have to use any big fancy "package factory" or something equivalent to it. Plus it uses very little space on my drive: only .9 mb. If I learn of something like that that has autorun and takes only less than 8 seconds on startup to run, well, than i might think of switching to that. I'm also thinking of using Appetizer--when i get it to work on Autorun.

What do you mean?

Do you mean autorunning PStart? You can do that. Or do you mean autorunning some applications when PStart starts? You can do that too.

Cheers!

I meant autorunning appetizer (a different menu). But its too much hassle to get the autorun file to work to run it instead of PStart.

Portable Start Menu

No, not Pstart Smile Portable Start Menu, free from here. Seems I'm the only one, so far... I found it because I use AM-Deadlink from the same site. I like its small footprint, the ease of adding other non-PA applications, and the subfolders.

Menu? whats that? i dont

Menu? whats that? i dont have any of this so called "menu".

if i do then it must be N/A, NONE, NONE-EXISTANT. I use my portable apps seperate and indivigualy. it reminds me of the Mac days when you had to physicly find the EXE and double click it to open it. makes the need to have things arranged all nice and neatly more importiant than most other junk.
