Hi John and everybody else here,
I'm using FFP since quite a time now and am very happy with it. Especially the fact that I can keep all my passwords encrypted within the browser protecting them by the master password comes in very handy if you want to access password protected sites from an internet cafe.
Now to my problem: since a couple of months or so the initial Master Password prompt at startup of FFP appears twice or sometimes even three times. In the beginning I thought that I just made a mistake in typing the right MPW but then I realized that there are actually two identical prompt windows one over the other.
I thought that I maybe messed up my FFP by letting him continously auto-updating by itself, so now with the new version 2.0.0.8 I installed a fresh copy of it and copying only the plugins and profile folders from my old version, hoping that this annoying phenomenae would disappear, but as I'm here writing this help request, it didn't... 
I also tried to export all my passwords with the Password Exporter 1.0.6 extension, then deleted all my passwords within FFP and reimported them but nothing changed.
Anybody any idea?

What is your Homepage?
Do you have more that one page/tab open with Firefox on launch?
Does your homepage require a password/login?
If you have more than one page/tab open with Firefox do they both/all require a login/password?
Also, Very Importantly, Do you have a "non page" add-on load with Firefox that could require a login/password? That is, when Firefox starts does it load an add-on that checks to see if you have any mail at Yahoo or some such site, even though there is no tab/window showing.
If you set Firefox to open to a blank page and then go to your "homepage[s]" one at time does this still happen?
Envision this scenario, you launch FF and your homepage requires you to login, also at launch your abc-ad-on checks to see if you have mail at Yahoo, also at launch your xyz-add-on checks to see how many minutes are remaining on your AT&T cell phone account.

Yes, I do have usually more than one tab open with FF on launch. I am using the extension TAB MIX PLUS 0.3.6 which opens all pages that I had open on closing the previous session of FF.
Sometimes some pages of course do require a login like Gmail or Ebay. Gmail, even if the page is filled with my login data does not work though, I do have to close this tab and reopen my mail account by clicking on the Gmail Manager add-onn on the bottom of the screen.
Do you think that this double prompt depends on some extension I have installed?
In this case would it be helpful if I list all my installed extensions?

This isn't a Firefox Portable issue. It's something with Firefox or TMP. I'd try disabling TMP since you don't need it for what you want (FF has the ability to restore your session built in, you just have to choose that as your start page). If that doesn't work, ask over at mozillaZine.

I do not know enough about all the various add-ons/plug-in/extensions to know which ones come into play so the list probably would not help. I do know that some try to accomplish a task immediately on the launch of FF and if that task requires the use of a password/login stored in the FF password manager it will immediately prompt for the master password.
I think the simple answer is that you have multiple pages/tabs and or add-ons/extensions loading at startup that require a password to be filled in by the FF password manager. Each is "calling" the manager to provide the login/password before it [the page or add-on] can continue. The manager can't provide this information until you enter the Master Password.
Firefox starts,
Loads mailchecker app, which calls up the FF PW manger
Loads PAGE1/TAB1 which calls up the FF PW manager
Loads still another app which calls up the FF PW manger,
You would think that the FF PW MANAGER would know that it has already been called up and would allow only one Window/Prompt for the entering of the master password, but this appears to not be the case.
The only solution I can think of is to NOT have various pages and/or add-on/exertions that require passwords all loading at the same time

I haven't realized that FF had the TMP features already built in, so now I have one add-on less to load at startup.
Trying to disable all add-ons and switching them on one by one, I found out that Gmail Manager was the "bad guy" who is responsible for that double prompt. Really a pity because I like this extension very much.
I guess there's nothing to do then except hoping that in a future version this will not happen any more.

If you have multiple tabs loading up at startup, then just exclude that gmail tab from the startup and then open that tab separately.

the same issue both with Firefox and Thunderbird, but I just ignore it... consider it a little prize for your safety...
