PNotes Portable 2.5.0.101 Pre-Release 1 (Testers needed)

Updated so John doesn't have to. Smile

PNotes is a sticky note utility that allows you to post sticky notes on your screen. It has multiple display options as well as a handy feature to schedule notes to pop up. It's small (under 1MB) and works well on Windows 2000 and up.

PNotes Portable 2.5.0.101 Pre-Release 1
(may take a few minutes to hit the download servers)

Edit: Just realised 2 things. One, I accidentally left in Notes.pndb in App\PNotes. Delete as you will. Two, it doesn't change the location of the Notes.pndb. I'll wait for an update from Lamer, but until then, don't count this as an official pre-release.
Edit 2: Now uses 101 as mentioned below, so should be fully working now.

Well, this is the build wich supports both configuration file location and data file location via command line. (Is it the right topic or I should place it in previous one? :))
http://lamer.byethost32.com/files/PNotes2.5.0.101.zip
The switches are -conf or -config
The usage:
PNotes.exe -conf "C:\blahblahblah" "C:\heyhoheyho"
or
PNotes.exe -conf "C:\blahblahblah\" "C:\heyhoheyho\"
or
PNotes.exe -conf "C:\blahblahblah\Notes.ini" "C:\heyhoheyho\Notes.pndb"
or
PNotes.exe -conf "" "C:\heyhoheyho\Notes.pndb"
The first path - configuration file location - is required, so if you want to leave the default location, just send empty string. The second path - data file location - is optional and can be skipped.

I'm actually ready for release. The only detail is not closed: two guys, who have prepared localization files in Italian and Bulgarian are missing. I get no answer from them for a long time. So may be there is somebody who can translate three only phrases into Italian and Bulgarian?

10023=Send ;it means sending notes via e-mail
8069=Standard view ;it means “standard look” or “standard appearance”
8072=Confirmation before note deletion ;this is the caption of check box, which defines a program behavior before note deletion

Thank you in advance.

Hmm

I may be able to check with a teacher on the Italian one.

Random Locking up

Lamer,

Every once in a while, PNotes seems to lock my system up. It usually happens when I add text and then resize the note.

When the lock up occurs, I can't do anything. The mouse won't move, and I can't switch windows. If I wait long enough, I notice that the mouse pointer will move, but the update aren't frequent enough to be controllable. I can use Task Manager to initiate a restart, let it shut PNotes down, and catch it before Windows is restarted (when another program asks if I want to save).

I noticed that the Task Manager icon in the task tray was a solid green, so maybe PNotes was using close to 100% of the CPU. Not sure what the problem is.

I didn't see a forum on your website, but I noticed that you are checking this thread, so I thought I would post.

Thanks for the wonderful app,

Don

Don,
Does it happen when you work with semi-transparent note?
If so, I confirm - this is a bug. Well, not "is", this was a bug (I hope :)).
I've just uploaded the repaired version (the same link like at https://portableapps.com/node/9735#comment-53528).
Please, try it out.

Version Number

Can you increase the version number each time you make a change please?

BTW, why can't I just edit the original post with link? I searched for any "edit" option, but found nothing. It appears only when I post reply for the first time Sad But what if want to change something posted a week ago?

Well,

You can't edit it once someone has replied. I'll get this done up with new packaging and stuff too.

You can change the original post

You can change the original post in a thread if you start a thread like Ryan has above with the strikethru stuff (even non-moderators can do this).

You are correct...

Yes, it did happen when the notes were semi-transparent. I'll download the fix and give it a try.

Speaking of semi-transparent, it seems to behave oddly, or at least, not the way I would expect.

  • The notes only seem to go from transparent to non-transparent if you move the mouse over top or bottom regions of the note. I would think that they would expect them to become non-transparent whenever the mouse is over the note.
  • I would think that the notes would become transparent after some period of time (maybe even fade), unless:
    1. the mouse is still over the note,
    2. the note is selected, or
    3. the cursor is in the note
  • I would think that "Show all" would make all transparent notes non-transparent.

You may have already thought of these suggestions, either rejected them or are working toward them. I just thought I would put these ideas out there.

Thanks again for your wonderful app,

Don

Well, the release is ready

Well, the release is ready on my site:
http://lamer.byethost32.com/projects.php?lang=PNotes
Also there is a small bonus for PNotes funs Smile - a little program named PNSkinCreator, for creating your own skins. It is NOT an image editor, all that it knows - to take existing images and build the skin or load existing skin and change it.

Thank you very much.

Hey, clicking on the link

Hey, clicking on the link works now :P.

Oh, and i'll test this stuff out tonight at home. Looks pretty good, everything seems to work fine. Thanks for including the Skin Creator, it really comes in handy.

If at all possible, can PNotes support transparency, or do all images need the pink background? If it is possible, that would open skinning up to a lot more possibilities.

Yes, this background color

Yes, this background color is ugly :), but this is the way for program to show the skin (by making all pixels with magenta color transparent). Otherwise you should supply the full skin's definition, i.e. define each point of its outline ;).
May be in future I'll turn the backcolor of skin to any parameter, but currently it's magenta only.
May be I don't understand and you mean not PNotes, but PNSkinCreator?

I meant is the magenta

I meant is the magenta necessary, or can the .skn files use PNGs with alpha transparency, meaning the transparency will show without requiring the "magic color"

No, it cannot. You can tell

No, it cannot. You can tell to any window - "use the specified color as transparent", so every pixel colored with such color will be transparent, i.e. unvisible. Or, in contrast, you can tell to window - "use this figure as your region" and then it will really change its region. But in order to define this region you need the mask color too Wink Only very simple regions could be defined just by supplying coordinates without using of mask color - and what about complex regions, which consist of hundreds or thousands points of coordinates?

Outstanding application, Lamer...

Thank you for creating it. Thanks, also, for the nifty little skin creator.

One minor request: please consider adding a visible control or text-message regarding changing the skinless note color.

I'm aware that the color can be changed via Preferences > Preview > Double-click, but only because I: 1. visited your site (noticed the multiple colors) and 2. opened the help file to determine how it was done.

In any case, thanks again for a truly useful portable app.

Wonderful! That's the way all advanced users should do! Smile
Indeed, I should add some visual notification - it's really in the "TODO' list.

Thank you for good words and suggestion!

Yeh

I would have had the new version out by now, but my power supply on my computer stuffed up, so I won't know until after Saturday if I can get my computer back up and running. I'll try and get it done ASAP Smile

Nice

It turned out good, I'm impressed with the tack. Did you try to add any shadowing or other effects to the horizontal skinny part of the tack to see how it would look?
