Unstable flash drive (was: Unstable Open Office 2.21)

I have tried to run Open Office 2.21 with four different XP Prof based laptop and in two desktop system (XP Pro and Vista). I think Portable Open Office is still quite unstable and can't be used for serious work. In my system Portable Open Office is installed to default directory to new fast Cosair Voyager GT 8GB USB stix. The most frustrating experience was a lost spreadsheet after a couple hours of work when PC freezed when I was saving the work. There is also some features not working at all in Open Office menus - Extension manager is a example which I like to use for customized thesaurus and hypenation.

When rough edges are away I think PortableApps system and Portable Open Office is a killer system I shall use every day. Today I'm waiting for better days...

Please read the faq's an the manual

It seams that You problem depends on missing and/or coruppted JRE on the used systems.

You can't use all features of OpenOffice.org (Portable or not) without Java RE!
For example: Most of the wizards, Extention manager and some more tools depends on JRE.

In order to work 'stable' with all features a local java installation or (the better solution) portable JRE is recommended.

Read here: https://portableapps.com/support/openoffice_portable#java

Don't call Openoffice.org Portable or another App unstable if You have a problem ...
... read the Doc's an FAQ's or ask for help Smile

Unstable OO even with Java

Thanks for your reply Marko!

I have tried to run POO with local and portable Java with no success to remove my problem even after I removed and reinstalled JRE. I like not to impugn Portable OO - I think it's a great idea!

If you read this discussion and have had YOURSELF (or know someone else) same problem descirbed above and have found a working solution, please let me know! You will save my day!

Solution found ...

A solution in my case was very simple - the reason was a hardware defect I could not expect when useing a brand new USB stix. Suggestion came from our university's IT support - many thanx to them! The solution is quite simple if you think an other problem I had - computer crashing when I tried to save a file to stix. A fine example about "keep it simple" strategy, when trying to solve your PC problems.

After re-installing PortableApps to other USB stix OO seems to work OK, also Extension Manager!
