Answer1: Hmmm good question! NO!
Answer2: John is working on it, he just has to recompile QEMU w/o FMOD.

It's not that

It's the fact that we need it to be open source, so that we can host it on SourceForge.

And would the portable apps team PLEASE make a Page with a link to this site on the server and link to this page under Operating Systems at https://portableapps.com/apps and under Linux at https://portableapps.com/apps/operating_systems, Thank you!

If you are talking about

If you are talking about "boot from USB": that is controlled by the machine you plug into. Some can, and some of the ones that can are even configured to allow it. I've not had a lot of luck just walking up to a machine and booting from USB without tinkering first.

If you are asking about a Linux that COULD boot from a USB (if the machine is able) without doing Terminal, yes, there are some. If John does one, I'd expect that would be a consideration. Others have done it too. Some of them think you should go through a few terminal commands to get everything set up the first time, sort of as hazing for those new to Terminal commands, but I'd expect there to be some that have a GUI installer.

If you are talking about plugging a USB drive into a machine that is running Windows, and, without exiting from Windows, running Linux in a virtual machine window, then Espreon's answer is quite good.

Formatting your flash is optional, I think.

not so hard

No it is not so hard. The OP was saying he didn't like using terminal commands. I was trying to be humorous or teasing about having to type at the terminal something as hard as that...

I got your joke, rab040ma.

BTW, QemuPDL is soon to be on one of the many flash drives I own. It looks and runs great (even on my crummy home pc with 256(ish)mb ram). If only it had games Sad ... Oh well, Sourceforge has good games that might work with it.

DSL

Damn Small Linux actually can do this, except the drive formatting stuff - you should create a backup before the following things.

All that you have to do is follow the steps described here:
http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Installing_to_a_USB_Flash_Drive...

It worked for me.

I...

...second the motion.

Then, maybe start a "Sticky" thread on the "Request Apps" board, wherein are listed all the more popular Linux distros that can be booted/run off of a thumbdrive (DSL, Puppy, MCNlive, etc), w/ links to the download and "instructions" pages for each.

Whattaya all think 'bout that idea?...

Please Don't

This certainly isn't sticky-worthy. The % of folks interested in a portable linux (especially a bootable one) is relatively low.

Stickies are for things that EVERYONE should see. A bootable linux discussion is just another topic.

ok sure... (edit for typos :) )

"Portable Linux"
(all links posted at bottom of post)

Linux can run in portable means by several methods: livecd, liveusb, and Virtualization are the most common methods.
For Virtualization qemu would be safest (portable) bet to use just download qemu for win32 platform and place on usb drive and create a virtual disk(using included qemu-img ex.(in command prompt of course) qemu-img create -f qcow2 linux.img 2G, would create a 2 gig (assuming you have the space to spare ) disk image named linux.img as qemu's native format qcow2 wich supports compression and encryption) and mount it as a drive under Qemu (via -hda switch ex. qemu -L . -m 128 -hda linux.img would run linux.img as primary hard drive the virtual machine would have 128megs of Ram) and install linux (your distro of choice) under it (you would need some knowledge with Linux OS to install it under VM if you plan to do it manually unless you want to use a preinstalled VM (theres no fun there Smile ) and there are several projects out that already do this one being puppy linux.
As for a LiveCD there are alot of options several prime being: Slax Linux, MCN Live, Puppy Linux, DSL, All *buntu Install CD's are Live Environments and have an option to install to local hard disk, Knoppix, etc... etc... (try www.google.com Smile ) just download Iso and burn to CD using a burning application that handles iso images such as cdrtfe, infrarecorder, imgburn
As for LiveUSB this can get a tab bit more complicated for the inexperienced Linux user there are several options for this to getting your media bootable, you will need to load a Bootloader some examples would be: Grub, Lilo, Syslinux (Extlinux for ext2,3 partitions )
After choosing a bootloader you then need to install the distro to the usb device, there are some that can do all of this automatically (Slax and MCN live are 2 two that do) Just read the documentation on that website)

for Slax: http://slax.hosting4p.com/ and http://blog.slax.org/ for latest beta
for Qemu: http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/index.html
for Syslinux: http://syslinux.zytor.com/
for Grub: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/
for Lilo: http://lilo.go.dyndns.org/
for Puppylinux: http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1
for DSL linux: http://damnsmalllinux.org/
for Knoppix Linux: http://www.knoppix.net/
for cdrtfe: http://cdrtfe.sourceforge.net/
for imgburn: http://imgburn.com/
for infrarecorder: http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
and least but not last http://www.google.com
and also remember to RTFM!

well yea its a messy doc just edit and sticky it if you want

Forum paradigm? How about wiki

Even if it isn't something everyone is interested in, having all the info in one place would be helpful for the few who are.

But is a forum, even a searchable forum, the best paradigm? I should think a wiki (perhaps with a limited number of contributors and an even more limited number of editors) would work better and be more easily maintained. Not that "Portable Linux" needs to be at the high-priority end of the tree, but it could end up being a small-to-medium branch somewhere.

Or maybe there is another plugin available to Drupal that would be even better?

Nice

There's been about a thousand post from you for pointless questions like 'where'd the search box come from' or 'been hackin'.

But good job on using the reply button this one time, even though your comment sounds like it was to the main poster.

Try KNOPPIX

You should try the KNOPPIX Live CD (http://www.knoppix.net/), simply boot from the CD-ROM drive, examine the persistence image file function.

In a nutshell, you shall able to save your data through sessions to an image file (to hard drive, pendrive etc.), you could even choose AES encryption for that.

During next boot sequence, KNOPPIX will search all accessible drives for the image file mentioned before. If found some, will load and use that one.

Dear moderators, would be a nice touch to create a separate forum for stuff like that, it seems some folks here interested. I know it's not concerned with PortableApps, but with the philosophy behind it.

Well...

...there are ways *around* that limitation (boot floppy which redirects to your USB drive), but I don't have any links for you at the moment.

Perhaps some others here can re-direct the poster to such floppies?..

Interesting, but it's more

Interesting, but it's more like a portable x-server that connects to sessions on their server across the Internet. A little laggy ... about comparable to the QEMU sessions we've been talking about.

Slax

You could also use Slax. http://www.slax.org/ Just download the latest release and burn it to a CD. You can also extract the files from the ISO image (I use Undisker) and put them on a USB drive (need like a 512). Reboot your computer with the USB drive plugged in and it should boot. If your computer won't boot directly from the USB drive, then download the Slax boot ISO image and burn that to a CD. Then make sure the CD is in the CD drive and your USB drive is plugged in and it will boot Slax. You will get a welcome page that is text base. Log in using root and the password toor, and then type 'startx'. And it will load KDE. There are also Linux distros that have a LiveCD. Feather Linux is one, Ubuntu has a live CD, PCLinuxOS starts as a live CD. There are a ton of portable Linux OSes out there.

Microsoft just gives you Windows, Linux gives you the whole house.

Here is a linky for a good distro search engine.
To search for some, make sure you select "live cd's" in the "catagory" dropdown.

Portable Linux

Can we use VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/, download the OSE (open source edition) and then install a virtual linux vmdk disk with all the settings and everything saved on pendrive?

The pendrive must be a big one though since if we intend to use Linux properly by installing new software you need approx 4 GB of space just for portable Linux IMHO.

Maybe debian will do...

2. If it bothers u that much that information gets repeated, don't read duplicate info - Stop Complaining!

3. You cannot speak for the whole community - Stop Complaining!
