Try Puppy Linux.

I'm not trying to give free advertisements but if you want a linux w/ your portable apps try QEMU-Puppy (search for it on Google). I like it but I want to try to put KDE or Beryl on it because I prefer beauty over functionality alone. (the desktop looks very early 90's).

I didn't, but if you have

I didn't, but if you have the room and are going to use QEmu, I'd suggest a full blown linux distro (Mandriva allows you to cut back on what you install - and my portable device is a 20gb Portable EHDD :P).

But the puppy maskot looks cute, I'll try puppy linux.

Where can people get QEmu from?

Hmm?

Puppy

I too have tried QEMU-Puppy. Its main claim to fame is being a "live" distro that can run in a QEMU window, and actually save your settings and stuff back to your USB drive. So you don't have to boot from it, you can run it from inside Windows, and actually do some things.

Puppy is a pretty stripped down Linux, though. It would have to be, to be able to run on top of Windows. It does have a GUI, but not a lot of frills. Think "stripped down" as in ready for work ... but if you are expecting an elegant interface, this isn't it.

well i actually downloaded

well i actually downloaded it bout an hour ago and run it with QEMU. it looks good better interface than DSL and a little user friendly but on the functional side of things i really don't know how good it is.
this one came with QEMU already compiled with it. easy work.lol

Yeah, that's kinda the idea...

...Puppy is "stripped down" by design:

The original thought was to have a basic Linux that could be run easily off of a burned CD, and later to be able to burn stuff (settings, downloaded files, created documents, etc.) back TO said disc via using multi-session RW discs.

In order to have room for the stuff burned back onto CD, they wanted to keep the OS as small-footprinted as possible.

...'Course now, with the ability to run an OS off of a USB thumbdrive or Ext. HDD, this footprint stuff is largely a non-issue, but this is now and 'dat was THEN...

We still have limits, just different ones.

Even if the USB drive has lots of storage space, running in a QEMU virtual machine uses other resources. It turns out that the same design considerations that made Puppy have such a small storage footprint on CD also give it a small footprint in RAM when running in QEMU, which might be a good thing.

Linux is very good at running with limited resources, but things can still slow way down if one uses more resources than are immediately available. Newer machines with 1GB or more of RAM might be able to start running a more complete release inside QEMU, but I don't think it would be good to rely on that much RAM being available. Loading a larger image from a USB drive will take a longer time, and saving preferences and data can take a while too, especially on a Flash drive.

In other words, I don't think we are completely free of trying to balance resources in order to optimize speed (starting and stopping the VM, as well as application speed), the number of applications that can be run at the same time, and so forth.

If we are going to load our USB Linux VM with more stuff, I'd still caution against throwing in everything; for a while, at least, it might be good to say that the minimum is the maximum, and consider carefully how desirable features balance against available resources.

GUI

So Beryl would be a bad idea?

Ok here u go

Puppy linux is not like DSL because DSL strives to keep a 50MB limit. But the link i posted earler with Puppy linux & QEUM is around 80-90MB in size. Then when u decompress it it will come up to 100MB and then decompress it again and it will finally be a size of 200-230MB (it's compressed twice and i can't give u exact figures because i lost both my flash drives last night).

U could use QEUM to run it with out booting from the flash drive and run it ontop of the current OS. I don't remember the apps because i haven't played with it enough but there is Seamonkey. and that partiting program can't remember the name.lol It comes with the X Desktop but u could also get others like KDE and GNOME.

I am no linux Pro or what ever u want to call it but that is all i could provide u with now. That all apply to the download link i provided. Hope that helped.

Go here

http://www.puppylinux.com/ and read, read, and then read some more.

Puppy has been around for a while. It has a development community (following) much like here. I've been using it for a few years and it has become a really good distribution. Tried it from QEMU but didn't like the limitations, so I just carry it around on a cd and boot it if I need it. I tend to use it as a rescue disk when a friend has computer problems.

Instead of using the QEMU

Instead of using the QEMU though, I would use virtualbox. At least with that, your virtual environment can directly interface with your host environment.

It's been talked about quite

It's been talked about quite a bit in these forums, and there may even be a portable version in development (not yet released). It's a virtual machine software.
