When I first read this I
When I first read this I thought it was a late april fools joke.
But my experiance with OO has been pretty negitive, crashes and such.
I hope it isn't the same deal with GIMP.
Anyway, awesome job! I can't belive that you've finally pulled off GIMP.

Hooray for Gimp!
I'm so happy that FINALLY Gimp is portable! No more chinsy Paintbrush programs for me!
My only thought for addition, though: If the known problem is a GTK issue that is easily solved by having GTK in your GIMP folder, why not package Portable Gimp with GTK allready in the folder? I'm sure that would greatly help the rating as well as make Portable Gimp more portable!
By the way, for everyone new to GIMP, it always has been a slow load... be paitient, it's worth it.
Not just it...
Because copying GTK to GIMP doesn't fully solve it. You need to copy GTK to the plugins directory, too... meaning 2 copies of it. If the error is due to a registry bug, we should come up with a way to fix it. So apps like Portable Gaim and GIMP can share a single GTK instance and save space.

Don't worry is worth as gold especially now as portable, shame that, as far as I understand, doesn't accept file RAW (Nikon and similar) otherwise it will be a total winner

Great! Always wanted to be able to try out The Gimp without installing it, together with the obligatory GTK. A pity, though, that the important help file, available as a separate download (over 20 MB) from the homepage, doesn't work with the portable version. Maybe that can be made to work, too?
GIMP Help Files
I tried to install the help files, but since Gimp isn't installed, it will not execute. Will you be either providing the files or creating an installer that will place the files into the directory in use?

installing GIMP help on the USB drive
I resorted to a local install of GTK, the GIMP and the help files; followed by zipping and moving the help files from the C: drive, which seems to have worked OK.

The Gimp is a great alternative to the insanely over priced Photoshop. However the load time for starting up the gimp on a Thumbdrive makes for a numbing couple of minutes.
I use PhotoFiltre instead
I found a little gem called PhotoFiltre that I installed on my Thumbdrive. It's very much like a scaled-down version of PhotoShop. It's not open source, but it is free and only 3 megs before installing extensions! Get it at http://www.photofiltre.com.

Even if it's free, it's illegal to repackage closed source software without the express permission (usually written) of the publisher.

I think this would be something that would benefit the community. Can you ask the author if he'd allow providing it? Or even just linking to it from the Photo & Design page?

I agree completely with the positive evaluation of PhotoFiltre. Have to add: PhotoFiltre also has a very good help file or "Tutorial" available, separately, for download as a PDF file! I DO miss The Gimp's helpfile! (hint)
Now why bother using doggy copies??
It has been a real problem for me using company's computer to work on graphics... and obviously need Photoshop-ish function.... and I was fighting about if I should install XXX onto the company's machine which of coz could get me into real trouble... Now with the 2GB thumb drive.... I can have all the functionalities with me all the time.... Well done!!!!!
Don't want to carry a computer, but I do need the software anytime!!!
