In my faculty all computers are set as guests and have very little privilegies. Installation of programs is forbiden by administrator so portable applications come to the rescue. But Portable Firefox and Portable Gaim can`t access the internet (we have DSL)! Portable Opera works just fine but Firefox and Gaim can`t access to the internet. What can be the problem??? If Opera works why Firefox and Gaim can`t break through?
They are blocking the program files or the ports, in Gaim's case. If the administrators block the port that Gaim uses to access the internet, then there is no way out. They are probably using a firewall that blocks all ports but the ones needed for the applications that are approved. While Firefox uses the standard HTTP port 80, they could be blocking the firefox EXE itself. (it has been done)
The reason Opera gets through could be because they do not believe anyone one would use it, maybe. So it works. But on a network where all PCs are configured as guests, I can almost guarantee that they are scanning for unknown running programs, and if one day they scan and see your Opera running, they might just decide to block that as well.
So, It all has to do with the security of the network. Not much you can do about it.
Also, Is IE used? If so, then they might be using a proxy. If so, then the proxy settings might need to be manually set in firefox, if not then they are probably blocking the most known browsers, and Opera just isn't on there list, YET.
Try the Proxy first and if that doesn't work there might not be much you can do, but hope they don't see Opera running.

Opera may be auto-importing the proxy settings. To find out if you're using a proxy and what the settings are, try ProxyGet mentioned here:

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
IE is used, it`s the only browser installed. I`ll check out proxy settings with that application. I`ll try some other internet related portable software too to see is it working. Next wednesday I`ll check it out and let you know.

Because Opera is still the best Browser ever.
What is this, an Opera commercial?
Just an opinion
That ProxyGet utility works great. I managed to set up FireFox to work. In connection settings I set up "Manualy proxy configuration" and it worked. Before that I tried with "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" but that didn`t worked.
And Opera@USB is not comercial.

Opera IS commercial. Doesn't matter that it's free.
Besides, when I said "Opera commercial," I was referring to TV/radio advertisements. Torpedro's post sounded suspiciously like a TV or radio ad for Opera; I was making a joke.
