The OP is treated as a "node", which is just a standard page, whereas replies are treated as comments. I think John only did it for the comments, as the nodes are kept in a different template, or can't be modified, or something.

This also makes sure people are not going to post many threads to pimp their homepage I think
All homepage links have a REL=NOFOLLOW on them, so they won't help with search engine rankings or the like. I just haven't edited the node setups to get homepage links yet.
