Notepad++ leaves traces

I installed Notepad++ on my tumbdrive and found a shortcut placed on my desktop. when i right click on a file on the computer i originally installed it on my thumb drive it gives me a notepad++ option.

I got in trouble for this. Can this issue be resolved in future versions.

At ANY point did you do

At ANY point did you do something like this:

Right click a file [or shift-right click a file]
and choose "Open With"
and then choose Notepad++

If you did that Windows will remember that and make a "quasi" association with that type of file. In this case double clicking [left/main] will still open the file with the default program but the alternative program will remain as an option.

It's a Windows thing Sad

You need to always open a file thru the app in order to avoid this.

If you have Never done the above I have no idea what happened.

Or use cafe- but that

Or use cafe- but that removes the file associations after you leave.

No...

i did not use Open With. There is a separate line just for Notepad ++. It is like the full version of 7zip when you have the ability to right click on a file and either compress it, compress it to , Add to ___, extract to .

but you did right-click ...

right? So Windows must have made some sort of association with the program. You had it installed on the remote computer or just on your usb? I know that when I remove the usb key, files I associtated w/ VLC show the unknown icon instead of VLC's icon.

You said that he gave it a

You said that he gave it a file association- cafe does the same thing but removes the associations. Yes, it is a good thing.

Also, watch out for that tricky check box. It is possible to open things in this manner, without permanently assigning the file extensions- just the computer doesn't like to do this.

The issue i have here is

The issue i have here is that everytime i use the program IT is notified about my activity. This really take away the stealth of using notepad++. Using a cleaner will not resolve my issue du to the fact that it cannot be used without alerting IT of registry cleaning.

Sounds like you work in a harsh work place Sad

Best to use what they give you.

Portable Apps are NOT stealth apps, they really weren't intended to be.

CAFE doesn't edit the

CAFE doesn't edit the registry at all for its associations, it's all self contained....it says that in the description of the app lol

Did you install the version

Did you install the version from this site (from the menu at the left side of the page, for example? It should not have put a shortcut on your desktop, so I'm wondering if you used a different version or installer?

The PAF installer shouldn't make any file associations either, whereas the regular installer might.

Do you have a Notepad++ entry in "Add/remove programs"? If so, use it to remove the program, re-download the Notepad++ Portable, and install it using the PAM menu.

Delete the shortcut on your desktop, and reinstall the PAF version you donwload from this site. Let us know if a reinstall gives you a shortcut on your desktop.

nppcm.dll

Ensure that nppcm.dll is not in the Notepad++Portable\App\Notepad++ directory. It is not included with Notepad++ Portable from here (nor should it be).

Hmm

Did you try and set anything as default using the settings menu?
