Security/or History

How much of what i do using this software is tracked on host pc? my web browser installed on my work pc is explorer...they obviously block certain sites, in all honesty not many, but using the firefox app, i get past all those blocks, now dont get me wrong i am not trying look at inappropiate sites at work, but can my web viewing be traced using the firefox app? i want to start using meebo.com, which is normally blocked by job pc browser, but not on firefox app...is this safe or should i refrain? any tips appreciated...

Thanx in advance.

I think its safe

cause the history is stored on your flash drive.
but if you know how, you could search the registry and temp folders for traces after having visited the site.

Network

No matter what software you use, they can track you at the network level. Even though nothing is left behind on the PC to let them know that you visited meebo. I wouldn't risk my job over messing about on IM, personally.

Yes, but they could see the

Yes, but they could see the connection to Meebo. Isn't that enough? (What else would you be doing with a connection to Meebo than IM, and presumably there's a reason they don't want you doing that.)

If the Meebo connection does not use SSL (https), they could read the content too.

I dunno... If the IT dept.

I dunno...
If the IT dept. has the blocks at the application level, they're not too smart. However, unless you can show that using meebo.com somehow helps you get your work done, it's probably a bad idea. Use FxP to do work-related tasks and you should be in the clear.

well as far application lvl

well as far application lvl is concernd i cannot install any software, and as far as blockage is concernd with websites, i can change my access in internet tools, they are using proxy server but under the advanced tab i can add any site i want to, and it then unblocks it, now i havent taken advantage of this, i just know i can do it, so i am with you assuming they are not to smart, why wouldnt they block access to internet options? so i assume the lvl of security here and scrutiny is based on complaints...again, i truly am not trying to take advantage of anything, but i work in a very low call volume call center, our freedoms are many, except IM...email is great and avail...i guess it is always better to use caution..thnx again for the replys.

Circumventing the filters

Circumventing the filters (no matter how easy it may be Wink ) could get you in big trouble. I would say that you could probably get away with it quite easily, but is it worth the risk?

If you have email access,

If you have email access, what about Gmail's integrated chat? It supports AIM now I think as well (as well as any Jabber protocol).

Another good idea would be to VPN to your home computer or another server. But if you can't install software, a VPN client probably couldn't run. I mean there's OpenVPNPortable, but you have to have privs to install the TAP adapter. After that it's just user access to run the connection. Then forward all internet traffic over the VPN.

But I'll echo the others, don't risk your job over it.
