I have (regular) Thunderbird installed on my home (Win 98) machine. I don't use it because it's unstable on this machine (I use SeaMonkey) but it's nice to have when I need an alternate client.
In any case, I installed Thunderbird Portable on a USB drive while on my home machine. When I started to use Thunderbird Portable (to test it out) it seems to have snarfed my profile from my installed Thunderbird, and my Email is apparantly being saved on my home machine too. But I want it all saved on my USB drive (without affecting the settings of my installed Thunderbird). Short of uninstalling Thunderbird from my home machine, and then re-doing the install of Thunderbird Portable, how can I set the portable version to save all on the USB drive, and leave the host machine alone?

Also, to transfer Emails from Thunderbird Portable (on my drive) to SeaMonkey, what's the best procedure?

AFAIK, the only way that PThunderbird read your installed profile is that you are executing thunderbird.exe (inside App folder) and not ThunderbirdPortable.exe, (inside the main folder), when you double-click on ThunderbirdPortable.exe it loads an ini file that tell Thunderbird.exe where to read your profile and skip the one installed on your PC.

Yep, that was it. Thanks! I must have looked too quickly before I clicked. Now, is thunderbird.exe required if I run ThunderbirdPortable? (I assume yes; TBp runs TB). Getting TBportable and FFportable on a 64 meg chip is a tight squeeze - is there anything I can sacrifice?

ThunderbirdPortable.exe calles Thunderbird.exe. But with the right parameters so all your data remains on your usb drive and the host system stays clean.
If you don't run run the Launcher (ThunderbirdPortable) things wont work and get messy. So you cant sacrifice anything except maybe for the 2 "Other" folders (/FirefoxPortable/Other and /ThunderbirdPortable/Other) but that wont save you much. You just cant have too many mails on a 64mb drive
If possible I'd buy a bigger one...
And make sure you uncheck the auto-update feature as it only works with at least 30mb of free space on the drive.

delete the folder "other", and also the folder "AppInfo" inside the "App" folder...
Of course help.html, and everything in txt...
Inside every folder there is a txt file that just say "your blablabla goes here"... delete it.
Readme.txt, version.txt, license.txt, etc, etc...

Thanks. Is this true of Firefox portable also? I guess I lose the "help" functionality, but I can live with that. Together it buys me half a meg; not much but doubles what I have.
Now, there is an option in Thunderbird "to save disk space, delete messages that are [whatever]. Does this (as I hope and suspect) delete them =only= on my local drive (and leave them untouched on the server?) It would be a very costly mistake if I got it wrong!

And afaik you wont loose the help feature as thats built into FF and has nothing to do with Johns Launcher.
Yes that option will delete only your local emails.
There is a separate option to delete the mails on your server called "delete files from server after ... days"

In the data\profile folder, I see the following large files:
compreg.dat
XUL.mfl
XPC.mfl
xpti.dat
What are these? Especially XUL and XPC - they are three meg and change.

Is this the local copy of my remote inbox? What is its purpose (especially as IMAP has to redownload everything every time)? Is this the file whose size can be controlled by the "to save disk space, delete [whatever]" on this account?

What do these do?

is a list of all files in Thunderbirds profile.
xpti.dat for example gets created automatically.
I've never used IMAP so I don't know anything about that.
I wouldn't mess too much with the files in my Data folder, though.
