extract issue (posable bug)

Hi;
I encrypted my Tbird data profile folder.
I then later tried to open Tbird and it asked to create new accounts, which I canceled.
I then tried to decrypt my data profile, box opened and said "starting" then
just stopped. Tried aborting, nothing, locked up could not even exit, I had to use task manager.

After some head scratching, I then went into my Tbird/data profile folder and noticed new files had been created.
I deleted all non encrypted files that matched the encrypted ones (check sub-dir too)
I restarted Toucan and everything then worked.

Will Toucan not over-right another file with same name? even though size is different?
Is there a setting I missed?

Soory

it's been so long, so to get this straight,

-You were using Secure and encrypted a bunch of files, but the original files were overwritten
-It then wouldn't decrypt?

I encrypted Tbirds data

I encrypted Tbirds data files, which deleted them/changed ext.
I then opened Tbird, which created new data files.
Then I could not un-encrypt the encrypted data files as they would not over-write the new files and it locked up.
the only way out was to ctr-alt-del and shut dowm toucan.
To get files un-encrypted I had to manually delete the new files in Tbird/data.
I could then un-encrypt the files back to the origanals.

Ahh, right

I see now, does this still happen in the latest beta (which can be found in the beta testing forum)?

Unknown,,,,I will try in a few days, although I do not see the problem in list of improvements.

Problem is easy to reproduce, just encrypt tbird/data, start Tbird , it will make new data files, then try to un-encrypt the encrypted data files.

Tried latest betta,

Bad move
I could not get it to work, locked up, had to 3 finger salute, after some monkeying around I got files unencrypted.
Next time I will back up originals BEFORE I try new software.
ver 1.2 better

Oh

that's dissapointing. The main issue behind all of this is that when Toucan encrypts files (using Rijndael) an extension is appended to the files. This means that to Thunderbird they no longer look like a profile so it creates another set of files. When you come to decrypt the files Toucan tries to remove the extension, however if there is already a file with that name it cannot, and so the decryption fails. At moment the only way to stop this happening is to simply not run Thunderbird when the files are encrypted, so the new files will not be created and you can decrypt to your hearts delight!

Indeed,

I think that in 1.2.1 I'll set it to overwrite by default and pop up a small warning, what do people think?

Erm...

Why don't you just call it AES? Blum

How so?

What do you mean? I wasn't aware that anything changed between the original and AES certification.
