I was looking around for some batch file renamers, so you can rename multiple files at once very easily, and the three I liked were these:
Ant Renamer
Some of you may have heard of this. It's GPL'd. It's probably the simpler of the them. It's got an easy way to set many renaming rules, and the interface is pretty easy to grasp. There's some screenshots here to give you a basic idea.
Metamorphose
Now, this is also a very good file renamer, but it's got a lot of features, and may be more than a lot of us need, and even too confusing for some. Just take a look at the screenshots here. In the end, it is quite decent, just a lot of ways to set rules, etc.
Multi File Renamer
Now this one's probably the simplest of them. It's easy to set rules. You can set quite a few rules. The interface isn't at all cluttered, and it's easy to select you files. This is what I use personally (sometimes Metamorphose as well). Here's a screenshot of the main interface.
Just to note, I thot that Multi File Renamer used .NET, but I may have confused it with another a tried once. So I don't think it does.
So please let me know which one you think would be best as a portable app.

I'm waiting with bated breadth.
I currently use renamefiles_v2.42_us.exe
I think it's pretty portable.
It's okay but I think it's freeware which I'm guessing mean not OSS but I'm not sure.
I use it a lot. Basically I need to rename files in different directories that have the same name to I can put them in the same directory
eg.
From:
dir 1 name1.ext, name2.ext, name3.ext, name4.ext, name5.ext
dir 2 name1.ext, name2.ext, name3.ext, name4.ext, name5.ext
dir 3 name1.ext, name2.ext, name3.ext, name4.ext, name5.ext
to
dir1 a1.ext, a2.ext, a3.ext, a4.ext, a5.ext
dir2 b1.ext, b2.ext, b3.ext, b4.ext, b5.ext
dir3 c1.ext, c2.ext, c3.ext, c4.ext, c5.ext
an oss portable that can do this easily would get my vote.

They all look pretty nice, Metamorphose may be too much functionality though. Multi File Rename hasn't been updated since 2005, and Ant Renamer hasnt been updated since 2006. Both seem to work fine though.

I don't use it very often, but it seems to support any version of Windows after 98SE, including Unicode filenames.
No idea about the licence, looked high & low couldn't find anything, it's just called "public".
It's probably way too complicated for the average user, but it's great functionality...
Thanks for this I was looking for a portable replacement for Batch File Renamer 2.51.
Bulkrename utility seems to be a pretty good app
FreeCommanderPortable has a batch rename feature.
And the FreeCommanderPortable rename feature is excellent. I haven't found anything that is easier or better.

FreeCommanderPortable's rename feature is indeed excellent, but it only works with ANSI characters. That makes it obsolete for many users around the world. For Unicode supported batch file renames, nothing beats AntRenamer (Portable).
My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.
I think I'd heard that the next FC release will be Unicode... I could be wrong though.

Rename Master 3.12 Multi Renamer is a fine tool and is already portable from the developer, joejoesoft, at http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/108/
He has other goodies and keeps things updated and backward compatible. The rules for renaming can be sequenced as you wish to run in a single operation or performed one operation at a time on the target files or folders. There is an undo option, but don't get frisky and close the program until you are sure you've done what you intended. Otherwise the changes will be hard to undo.
