FileZilla Client

A name change and update to 3.00. Look like a new site, too (filezilla.sf.net redirects):

I know

As has been stated many times, I receive automatic notification.

I'm not sure about 3.0. Some of the features I really like in 2.x are gone. Personally, I'm sticking with 2.x. I may post em both for people.

What features? I can't be screwed to download and install it, since I use the portable version anyway.
From what I could see nothing much changed.

Opening Files

They dropped the entire ability for FileZilla to be able to open files in different apps. So, whereas with FileZilla 2.x you can configure it to open html files in KompoZer, PDF files in Sumatra, etc... in 3.x you can't even open files from FileZilla... at all.

For all intents and purposes FileZilla 3.0 is FileZilla 2.0 with file opening removed and a couple new view options (side by side explorer, etc). It feels like a step backward to me. Sad

WTF?

That is definitely an issue for me. Thanks for the heads up John, I'll be sure not to upgrade Wink

Was it on purpose and if so, should I file a feature request?

Rewrite

It's because 3.0 is a full rewrite from 2.0 and they 'didn't have time' to get all the features in. So, many people are staying with 2.x until 3.0 catches up. The goal of the rewrite appears to be code quality, so 3.0 is said to fix some long-standing (but rare) bugs in 2.x.

That's exactly what I thought. I'll keep a watchful eye on it.

I've never opened a file

I've never opened a file from Filezilla directly, so that's a non-issue to me. I like the screenshots I've seen of 3.0.

Since I also can't be bothered to install the upgrade ( Wink ), there's just one thing I want to know: is there now full drag and drop support? IMO, that is the only thing missing from 2.x.

Screenshots / Drag and Drop

There are only a couple of visual differences. First off is that you can theme the toolbar. Second is the extra view options (explorer style above and below).

You can still drag into FileZilla from Explorer (as you can with 2.x). With 3.0, you can also drag from FileZilla to Explorer, but only by installing the Explorer extension, which is not portable. Handy for local installs, but not applicable to the portable version.

I'd like 3.0

I recently installed 3.0 on my Ubuntu install, unaware that they rewrote it (for Linux! Yeah!) and was very pleasantly surprised. One feature that is sorely missing in 2.x is the "completed" tabs at the bottom - I can see at a glance how many files are transferred, how many are left, and if any failed - useful if I'm upgrading my site after working on it locally, when I've changed a lot of files.

I never opened files in other programs, I just use Notepad++ with the explorer extension so I don't need to, and I never used any of the other view options, so the progress function alone is enough to convert me to 3.0, although having a native Linux version is superb beyond belief. I haven't explored the differences enough to know of anything else that might contribute to that.

I know that you're just human and all, so I'm not pushing, I'm just throwing in a vote for FZ 3.0.

P.S. I looked around for a thread about the FZ issue, and didn't see one that was obviously "The thread" for it...perhaps a sticky in the FZ forum would be helpful?

Agreed / Offer Both

When I first installed an looked at it, I just stuck with 2.x as well.

Good Idea John either post them both or

include both versions under one installer, and make an option to install 2x or 3x, oh and make an option to include translations or not.

Different

It'll be different downloads. Not sure about translations. Wasn't needed as an option previously since they were small. But since FileZilla Portable 3.0 will be about double the size of FileZilla Portable 2.x, I may change that.

FileZilla's settings!

Just a warning:

FileZilla 2.x could save it's settings to an .xml file within it's own directory (and it encrypted the passwords in the .xml file too - great!)...

...but FileZilla 3.x (at least as far as v3.0.1) saves it settings in the current 'user' section of 'Documents and Settings' with out scrambling anything...

...so if you use your USB stick in someone elses's 'puter and run FileZilla 3.x from it, you can leave behind all your settings and usage info including your site infos with unscrambled passwords.

That Filezilla 3 security

That Filezilla 3 security hole isn't listed as a bug. Why don't you add it?

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=887596&group_id=21558&func=browse

Filezilla 3 can be made to store the xml file on the usb stick, but it's not a default setting so people without a clue would end up leaving their passwords on other people's machines like you said.

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4366

I just found a huge discussion thread on the password encryption issue in Filezilla 3:

I discussed the non

I discussed the non encrypted passwords with the devs before. Sadly enough they argued it was on purpose. And even if they 'fixed' the problem it would be just a matter of importing an 2.x or 3.0 xml file into the current version and have all passwords exposed.

Vote for FileZilla 3 Portable

Now that FileZilla 3 is beginning to be more mature and feature complete it would be very handy to let people compare FileZilla 3 Portable to their FileZilla 2 (Portable).

It would help users and even the development because more users would post bug reports and feature requests for FileZilla 3 in order to make it better than FileZilla 2.

Thanks for your opinion.

I hope they get a way to encrypt and password protect the whole of filezilla now.
