Hi All
I'd like to have a portable Desktop Search program to index the 2000+ files on my flash drive. I read through the posts here (like https://portableapps.com/node/8502) but haven't found much that will work.
However, Puggle (http://puggle.sourceforge.net/index.html) is an open source desktop search engine that runs pretty fast and is visually attractive. From what I can tell (and I'm no expert) it's written in java, creates a directory .puggle under your username folder, and creates registry entries at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.puggle\OpenWithList and
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2823891122-1668281231-3604578275-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.puggle
as well as a few MRU entries. You have to have the JRE installed, but I have that on my computers anyway.
Is this doable?
Thanks!
Rich
I really like this one -
http://www.indexyourfiles.com/
It's not open source, but it's free, small, and natively portable. I've used it and it works very well.
Hi
This one is easy to use and all... but it only indexes file names - no content of the file. Puggle does both...

I've been looking for something like this for a while!
I may make it portable in time, looks like Java. But thanks for the find for now.
Mine.

Oops.

But you have to index every computer you run this on before you use it.
Unless you only use if to search your flash drive.
I only want to run it on my USB flash drive...
I'm trying out http://www.gaviri.com/ ... good but not the free and open source kind of good...

When portable Java is 'finalized', ryan can have a go at this if he's willing.
Eins: I hate Java stuff, I just happened to be stuck with it because RSSOwl is the best OS feed reader (for the desktop, for server side, I'm biased towards Lilina :P).
Zwei: Ryan is capitalised, patick patience.
Drei: Java is workable as is, just not finalised. Perfectly fine to start developing though.
Vier: I've got nothing. I just like German numbers

Don't hurt me.
Haha, I almost wrote 'Tim' as 'time' yesterday.

there is absolutly no abuse of power there
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
was the one and only time that it'll happen, after all he fixed his own typo and made it look like I couldn't spell!
the new mods are enjoying their new powers. I just hope they´ll get used to them soon and stop abusing them for their own amusement
But I guess its the same as with Christmas gifts: You play with them extensively for some weeks and then you go back to normal.
To quote Natalya Fyodorovna Simonova: "Boys with Toys!"

novelty has almost warn off, lets get back on topic!
Not for me!

Hello all!
A new portable edition of Puggle is now available for download at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=212914&package_id=256282
Cheers!
Thanks! Glad to see Puggle 0.2 is out, too. I can PAF this up with if anyone no one else wants too. It is Java so it may sit in beta for a while.
You could give Portable Firefox and the Zotero Plugin a try.
Its not a desktop search, but you can add your files there and find anything through the search. Crosslinks, notes, in-text-search, webpages etcetc are possible.
Great tool, but as I told you have to insert the files first.

Cheers!
Sounds interesting. I will try it.
