[The Perfect Request] Orbit Downloader

Program: Orbit Downloader

License: Freeware, Closed-source

Description: Orbit Downloader is an excellent download manager, which has a fairly small file size and many customizable options. It is currently the only download manager that supports RTMP capture which is free (eg. flash video files played on Yahoo Music). One of it's most useful features, known as Grab++, does not work when transported to different computers, however I believe that if you manually type in the address into the main window, the download manager will still download the file. As I see that there are currently no download managers packaged for portable devices, I believe that this program may be a very good asset to the already impressive collection.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of this project.

Not to be rude, but...

We can't consider this project because it's closed-source. I know there is a free download manager portable lurking around somewhere. Just search for that.

Sticked as a perfect request

That is one of the best requests I've ever seen. Thank you so much.

As was mentioned, we can't package it all together, as it's not open source. However, we can try and work on a standalone installer and launcher.

Unstickied

I don't think a request we can't fulfill is the best example Blum

But we can!

We can make a launcher like I did for uTorrent! Blum

Nah

The whole separate launcher and then download the app to be inside thing is just plain messy. They'll never wind up in the app directory. Most users won't use em. Some users won't even be able to use it (installers for the software itself require admin rights). We wind up helping out commercial software companies without them giving us anything in return (like the ability to package and redistribute a portablized version).

Yeah

But have you used my uTorrent one lately? It copies the .EXE automatically (and I'm working on having it download and install automatically, but it's not really a high priority).

Having the µTorrent Portable

Having the µTorrent Portable installer to auto-retrieve the required files while installing would be a very neat feature, while still being compliant to the open-source hosting nature of SourceForge.net.

I hope you can implement it somehow Smile

Thanks for the perfect

Thanks for the perfect request, I may have learned a thing or two. But as for Orbit Downloader, short answer no, Nobody should waste their time on it. Free Download Manager is open source, besides it is by far more superior -- it sports more features and options.

I nominate a launcher for Free Download Manager

Closed-Source Freeware not Open Source.

However I suspect FDM will be a priority for when PA.com officially ports freeware. I'd say it would be good if someone could develop a launcher for the mean time and would allow them to get a head in the testing so they have a fast track to pre-release status when freeware ports are officially supported.

FDM is open source...it did

FDM is open source...it did some funny things to firefox (i don't remember what exactly) so nobody has released a test version.

Why not use Free Download

Why not use Free Download Manager. Free, open-source and much better than orbit. No offense.

No

No, most people I've heard (along with myself) prefer orbit. It's download management system is much more efficient (though not as good as Flash Get, but FG lacks features).

Orbit... please open your source...

.

I don't know why people like Orbit... its interface is awful...
I preffer Internet Download Manager, but It isn't open source and neither freeware =/

PS: We already have DownThemAll extension for Firefox, I guess it's enough.

In the future, just watch what you were replying to. You bumped a post from 15 months ago, when it really wasn't all that necessary. Thanks. Smile
