PortableApps Menu

I wondered if it wouldn't come in handy if the PortableApps Menu would have an eject button, instead of a close button.
This way you could easily eject the USB drive if you want to.
If you programmers really love that big closing button, I'd be satisfied with a right-click-on-the-tray-icon menu, in which the option of ejecting the USB drive can be found.
One more thing about the closing button, does it have to stop the application? I always have the intention to click it when I want to close the menu.

Scrool bar

Would it be possible to add a schrool bar (like explorer)to the Portable Applications Menu so I could navigate up or down without having to keep pressing up/down buttons

I'm not sure what wk means

I'm not sure what wk means by "just scroll up or down" -- I know that the scroll wheel on my mouse works, maybe that's what he is talking about. Otherwise, I haven't found an alternative to clicking on one of the arrows multiple times.

If there is another way to scroll, maybe wk and explicate?

There are lots of suggestions for the next version of the Menu. We'll just have to make sure John doesn't overlook the important ones as he works.

By the way, since the original topic was about "eject button", it would probably be better form to start a new topic about "scroll bar" (or search to make sure it hasn't been suggested already) than ask your question here.

ok, i admit...

I´m working with mouse "scroll and click" or gestures for most of my jobs ("grown up with windows"), whereas a friend of mine ("real linux") works with the keyboard using shortkeys, typing a lot. He always bothers about the inconvenience of skipping from keyboard to mouse for just one or two clicks not supported by shortkeys. So I begin to realize Your point of view. EDIT: But still, why do You click repeatedly on the white arrows when it can be down much easier by using the wheel on Your mouse? A scrollbar might be usefull with more than about 40 apps - apart from that : the really nasty look of a plain windows scrollbar might disturb the neat themes presented on this site. EDIT:I was too slow in typing. See below Smile

I can and do use the scroll

I can and do use the scroll wheel on my mouse to scroll, or else PgUp/PgDn. The OP was asking about a scroll bar.

I know my wife insists on clicking multiple times on the arrow at either end of the scroll bar, refusing to either use the slider or the scroll wheel on her mouse. So maybe that's what the OP meant.

As far as I can tell, the PAM doesn't support most of the usual user-interface standards for scrolling or many other functions, whether for mouse or keyboard. As I said, the scroll wheel works, and PgUp/PgDn work from the keyboard. It's a bit awkward using the keyboard, though, because you pretty much have to use the mouse to pop it up from the tray, so your hand is already on the mouse.

If you have figured a way to make mouse gestures scroll the menu, a tutorial might be in order. Blum

mouse gestures would be fine with PAM,

but they´re not supported as far as I know. But You can go through the menu by shortkeys, at least in the 1.1ß. Sure You already know that from the original post

Still a the function for choosing the right app by keyboard is missing - or is there one not obvious. So You´re right, you have to skip from keyboard to mouse or/ and back again.

Edit: this freeware could be useful, stumbled on it today, but didn´t try out yet
http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/ but for now that should be enough hijacking someone else´s post. If there´s real need for gestures a new post should make it.

Other Scroll Options

Just so you know, you can scroll up and down by:

- clicking the buttons with the mouse
- hitting the up or down arrows on the keyboard
- using the scroll wheel on the mouse (faster)
- using the page up and page down keys on the keyboard (19 positions at a time)

Most people find the scroll wheel the easiest to use. These are all supported in the PortableApps.com Platform 1.1 Beta 4 Release

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

My menu, maybe PAM 1.5

My menu has a scrollbar SmithTechPortableMenu
Hopefully John will let me include it in PAM 1.5 as I'm supposed to be helping with the development.

What about Categories

Hi,

I just love your PAM, i was wondering if you will add the Categories option to your version of PAM.

I also hope the PAM will have an options menu like yours, and also flexible applications path

Thanks in advance, for your reply
Regards

Yeah I think your idea is right. Please add eject button like in the screenshoot in the home page of this site.

Features: Eject, Rename, Categories, Version info

Some nice features missing:
- Eject button,
- Ability to rename applications,
- Categorize applications (something like Vista or Kickoff Start Menu would be best),
- See applications info (version, etc. of the appinfo.ini),
- (advanced) Mechanism to find updates.

Take a look at the very

Take a look at the very first response, to the OP who also asked for eject.

(BTW, the first search item *currently* leads to another PAM build that has most of the features you are asking for....)

You don´t have to install an app into PAM or the mods

Just copy the app folder into yourdrive\portableapps\.. folder . refresh the icons by optionsmenu or restart the Pam and there You are. Every .exe will be recognized as app.
EDIT: I forgot: the app transfered to PAM should be portable or at least almost portable, of course Smile
