Name: Magic Mail Monitor - Web Site
Category: Internet
About:
Magic Mail Monitor is a utility to connect to POP3 enabled e-mail account and download only e-mail headers (and optionally a preview). Some people on a slow internet connection mind find this utility handy if you have a slow internet connection, or prefer to used webmail instead of a full-out e-mail client.

Notes:
I will be looking into possibilities for portablizing something like FreePOPs so you can use Magic Mail Monitor Portable to connect to services like Gmail and Hotmail, too.
but I won't be able to tell anything about it till saturday b/c my school dosen't allow email access...

Magic Mail Monitor has been updated to a 'Development Test'. There's no real significant changes, but please I would appreciate anyone that can to try it out and let me know how it goes, thanks.
I love this app. I have been using this app for over 5 years, since before it became open source.
Works as expected.

Enjoy.
I think that this progrqam needs to be fixed. it will not save my account in this portabl version. so i have to remember the settinge each time i log in. which is confusing.

PS i like mailwasher better. it does what i need this program to do. even the limited free version i think is more user-frendly. pitty they do not do a free portable version.

I use PopMan Portable and like it better than Magic Mail.

Works fine ....
I have installed the translation into German, what works well too.
I am not sure, if that is an useful application for me .... why should I use MagicMailMonitor when I can use Thunderbird ?
But I agree, the slow-internet-connection argument is pretty valid
And: It's not possible for me to recieve emails with Thunderbird in my office (where I am working behind a proxy)
Next week I can test MagicMailMonitor in my office, I am really curious about that ....
Let me know how it works behind your proxy, be cool if it did.
No, it does not ...
... and I haven't found any settings for proxies ....
Have you tryed the suggested program in the help files freepopsd it should help you out ok

I like the ability of Magic Mail Monitor to download only the headers and a preview.
There is a commercial program I use at home called Mailwasher. It does somewhat the same as MMM but also downloads the senders E-mail address. Then you can select mails to be deleted and/or bounced (real handy to get you off Spam lists). The program goes up to your E-mail source and deletes or bounces the mails you have marked, letting you then load up your regular E-mail program (say Thunderbird) and retrieve the mail you actually want to read.
Could MMM be expanded to allow you to tag E-mails for deletion/bouncing? This would be really useful in filtering your E-mail.
Just a suggestion.
Suggest it in the MMM forums then. It's a good idea, but Patrick just made the portable version.

MMM as filters that can be setup the way you want it.

Have you tried it with MMM?
ReneL, welcome back. Haven't seen you around these forums in a LONG time.
As for Gmail and POP3 access, I personally couldnt get MMM to work with it, maybe I just needed a bit more time tinkering though, i'll test again tonight.

In gmail settings you have to enable it. I'll try mine as a test.

The menubar across the middle of the programs flashes, I have no idea why, very distracting. Any ideas???
using a new basic laptop Vista Home Basic 1GB memory.
All my other Portable apps are fine and I tried a fresh download.
Yours, Roger
That's only Vista, I can't figure it out yet.
says it all.
Roger
vista was supposed to be free of bugs before it came out. Microsoft said that which was not really true.
linux is a better system but i cant seem to work out how to run programs with it. you seem to need to know the programming language for it to do anything but the basics. how frustrating.
xp is ok but it does also have the added flaw of auto updating people (like me) just inocently download the updates as most of the one suggested use numbers for title which gives you know indication what they are really for. and now my comp has all that junk on it and that can and does make it perform differently. like slower and all.
but Xp is still user frendly and i like using it.

Works well, leaves nothing behind of any consequence, but it leaves stuff in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.magic
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Magic.Document
those aren't a big deal and probably can't be handled though.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I'll add in code to handle them if there is admin rights. I'll also talk to the devs about not automaticially associating the extension.
sounds good
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Uoops ! I thought it's already fully portable !!!
Hope for a updated version soon ......
keys in HKLM\Software\Classes\ cannot be handled unless the user has admin privileges, they're just file associations, nothing big.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
wow u got alot of testers to bad i dont get that meny ill try it
Na na na, come on!
I have been using this daily for a long long time with no problems ... is anything still keeping it in Beta?
The only person that has access to the digital signature for all official packages is away for a few days, and now that the PortableApps.com Format specifications are released, the package needs some minor updates.

in the App folder talks about 7Zip...

talking readme files, that's amazing!!! Maybe they should be called hearme files in that case
I would test but I only use webmail. If you get them in I'll test.
Yes, i think this is what i am looking for. i use mailwasher free at home i use Gmail as my pop3 server where all my mail goes in then send it to mailwasher & thunderbird. if MMM is useful i will be happy and use that thru my flash drive.
now Where is the download.....???
better go look for it.
will be in touch.

Do let us know when this program develops and all. i am doing the slow download om my 56k dialup connection now. this sounds like a real good deal. was having real trouble finding a opensourse program like this. Mailwasher makes you pay fro their portable version on a licence like most you need to pay renew it once in a whilw and that just costs $$$
THanks for getting down to it and working to better the MMM program.

Can you include the available language files in the next test release? That would make it easier for MMM users to change the program to their own language. Thanks in advance!
Sure. I'll set it all up to pick the new menu variables and stuff. It's gonna be at least a week before I have time to work on it.
I have been using this every business day since it was ported to portable apps. I am not sure why it is still in beta ... how do we move this forward to a release app?
Strange problem...Mail Monitor starts up, lets me develop a new "mailbox" then, when I tell it to get the mail I can see it go out develop the list and then it "crashes" and just disappears.
If I open it back up, the mailbox I created is not there and I have to try all over again.
I am running this on a XP60 Thinkpad Laptop running Windows XP with SP3.
Very strange since, from the earlier comments, folks are not experiencing this issue.
"Chapter 2"
Tried it at home Pentium 4 3.5 GHz WinXP with SP3 and it works fine. Only thing I can think of is that something with our corporate Firewall trips the program. Otherwise it works fine didn't leave any fingerprints in the Registry or tmp/bak files.
I would say that its ready to "go commercial."
