Network Drives

This is a common issue in Windows and is due to a bug in the way Windows itself assigns device letters. Usually, this happens at work as many office computers have network drives assigned drive letters. If the next free drive letter for a hardware device is, say, the E: drive and you have a network drive assigned that letter, Windows won't properly assign a drive letter to that new device. Lame, huh? I think the solution is either to move your network drives further down the alphabet or to manually assign it to a new drive letter in device manager. There are several articles online that can help that can be found with a quick Google search.

USBDLM

If you have admin rights on the computer in question, try USBDLM. It runs as a windows service and does what Windows should do: prevents network drive conflicts and assigns the next free letter. You can also configure its ini to do other nifty things like assign a particular letter based on volume name, etc.

Note that it is not open source; it's free for private/educational use and requires a license for commercial use.

SOL defined

And if you don't know what "SOL" means...the "OL" means "outta luck".
