Portable MIDI Sequencers

Hi everyone,

I was wondering, are there any MIDI sequencers that are Open Source that aren't text-based that can be made portable. Sometimes, I'd like to be able to go to someone's house and make MIDI files with it. It'll be good if it has a staff view, a piano roll and also tempo/transpose MIDI features.

I use Anvil Studio on my computer, but it'll be nice if there was an Open Source alternative that is a little easier to use. I am a music freak basically (have been for all my life) and would love to see something along these lines! Even if there is a program that can be made portable that is similar to CakeWalk Home Studio, that will be great (earlier versions)!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can tell me!

This isn't open source, but

This isn't open source, but it is uncrippled shareware(just a nag screen at startup + you can choose to buy a license for $50). It's called Reaper by Cockos. http://www.reaper.fm/ You install it on your computer and then you will see an option in the start menu to create a portable installation on your usb drive.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot, I'll try it out, but do you know any freeware alternatives as well, or is Reaper the only good type of program? I use Anvil Studio at the moment, if this is easier than Anvil, I'll be very happy! Thanks again!

I've now got Reaper on my computer and on my USB drive! Again, thanks for everything. Being in Australia, the price for Reaper may be a little dearer for me to get, but I reckon that's a good price anyway!

Get involved in the forums

Get involved in the forums at their website. The developer actually takes your suggestions on the software, very much like this site and forum. Another thing is that this is the only portable app I can think of that supports vsti instruments.

Not the only one...

There's EnergyXT2, which is closed source and payware as well (not expensive, though) which is innately portable and hosts VSTs and VSTis. As it is the more lightweight solution, I would prefer it over Reaper.
