MAILTO, thunderbird and Vista

Hi:

I have a web page, who has a link that includes a MAILTO. Clicking into this link, the default email client opens a new email. Is very simple and it works succesfully in XP and 2003, because I configured Thunderbird portable as default email client.

But in Vista (business version) it does not work, because I'm not able to configure Thunderbird portable as my default client. There is a way in Vista to configure "non default windows programs", but Thunderbird portable does not appear to be selected (only MS outlook and MS live), and there is no way to select Thunderbird portable from my pendrive, because there are not an option to open a browser and select it.

What can I do to configure Thunderbird portable as my default email client?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have a vista machine to check on, but

you could try...

In Tools-->Options, on the General Tab, click on the Check Now button to see if it is the default mail client - if it isn't it should give you an option to make it so.

Thanks, but It does not work in Vista

As I mentioned, it works fine in XP or 2003, but not in Vista

do you know

that you shouldn't use portable programs as your default?

I need it for a while.

Thanks, but you are not answering my question.

why not use portable programs as defaults?

I know it's a bit off-topic, but Simeon says and I've seen this put forward many times here in the forum.
I use WinXP and 3 different PTBs for mail, of which one is the default mail application - done this for years with no problems at all (same with browser, 2 versions of a portable Opera). So why not use a portable app as default?

It's not the edition

It isn't the fact that it is "Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition" that causes a problem, it is the fact that it can be installed on a drive that isn't there.

If you place a copy of the PE version somewhere on your C: drive, (or somewhere else suitably static and permanent), then it will work fine as the default app.

However, if it is on a portable medium, that may or may not be there, or, equally badly, may change drive letter, then it will not work as expected, and could destabilise windows.

So, if you -know- what you're doing, it can work fine, but, it is NOT supported, the launchers do NOT update the appropriate registry keys in the case of a drive letter change, and for the average users of these apps, it is a real "no-no". Hence the simple statement of "You shouldn't do that" is a lot easier to use and explain than to teach everyone who doesn't understand the difference why it keeps breaking on them once a week and they're losing important emails all the time.

Sorry

It looks like you can't do that. See

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776873.aspx

In order to show up on that list in Vista, the program (e.g. Thunderbird) has to register itself with Windows. Since Portable applications don't register or install themselves at all, that particular function isn't likely to work any time soon.

I'd guess that the regular Thunderbird's installer takes care of that.

You can probably tweak the registry to accomplish what you want, but it's not recommended.

I think

there is a cheat...

run PTh, the registry settings are loaded, then you can do it...

Just guessing...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

If Portable Thunderbird is Already Open...

Any "mail to" links in my Portable Firefox will open a TB Compose window and my TB nor my FF is installed locally. So I do use Portable Apps only on this computer and do not install locally and have no trouble.

TB portable works fine in XP not Vista

I work with both XP & Vista (yes Mac also) laptops side by side and only the XP allows me to download, read, write & send on all my email accounts.

Am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit w/ sp1. Alas, I could not find any Vista cure for the problem. Maybe future TB writes will provide a "fix".
Anyone with ideas?

finally got all my email accounts working by checking the appropriate Security Settings>Use secure connection as follows:
business email - SSL
gmail - SSL
yahoo - SSL
hotmail - never
email.com - never

I had to test each one individually by trail & error.

TB portable works great, no more problem on vista machine. will see how the setting works on XP.
