thanks.

yup it works now
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Overall i like this game, i would play it as it is but i would like the minimize and close buttons to appear.
i dont like to go to process manager to close it
thats something I think I cant change.
Cause the installed version behaves the same and I only repackage it with the Launcher and such.
It is meant to be closed by playing the game to its end and then press the "Quit" button.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I'd say the best way to exit out quickly is clicking DONE if you're selecting weapons and then esc -> QUIT.
I have a feeling it's locked down due to the renderring engine... i tend to crash it every no and then if windows with overlays end up to intersect with the ATanks window
/sylikc
Now for testing the app:
1. It works great
2. Nothing is left behind
3. It's a little odd that the close and maximize buttons are disabled
4. Good job
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I thought that too. But thats the way it is. Its has a full screen mode and you can specify the size of the window via additional parameters if you want.

Thanks

#3:
Unfortunately, at the moment, the close button has to be disabled as in Windows it causes the game to hang. We're not entirely certain why, but it should be fixed in a few versions.
As for the maximize button being disabled, atanks does not properly handle being resized just yet (even through the menus - you have to restart the game), but that should be fixed in a future version as well.
It's a great game still, I just found that part a little odd. Great to hear that it's being worked on though. Thanks for the great application, and welcome to PortableApps.com
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Yeah, and it felt odd having to do it. Thankfully most people don't seem to mind too much.
Oh, I've been around a while... as a lurker ;>
Its always nice to have the developer show up here.
Thanks for the clarification and I'm looking forward to the new version

really don't care about resize or maximize... I just like to play the game... but what is a needed feature is a scroll bar in the weapons selections, unless you have a scroll wheel mouse you'll not notice you have more options (in a laptop is uncommon to use mouse), and at least in my case, I discover it by accident...

I've mentioned this on the forum, but it seems to me that the arrows should make it obvious that you have more options.
I never saw those arrows... have to check

like 10 times without using the arrows but at some point I realised that the others have these weird weapons I never saw in my list and then I found the arrows

Downloading and testing... reporting tomorrow...
/me is happy
EDIT: I couldn't wait, hehe... tested on Vista Home Premium, everything excelent.. going to test on XP in a while...
BTW, since the game stores settings on its same folder, I think Data folder is not necessary.

It shouldn't. It should store the settings in the Data folder. Otherwise it wouldn't be paf compliant...

I think that some apps here don't have the data folder (i.e. Sumatra?)
BTW, tested on XP... love it... works perfect...
Thanks a lot...

some Apps (md5sum for example) don't need one so they don't have one
Youre welcome glad you like it. I do too.

I've been meaning to look for a 2D version of Scorched Earth, so I'll definitely give this a try & get back to you on Monday.
Pardon the plug, but you may want to check out Scorched 3D at http://www.scorched3d.co.uk for some 3D action (& yes, it's an open source game... so somebody could make it portable when they have the time).

Despite a few control issues (Tip: Hit the "Help" button on the menu before playing), it worked just fine.
I say it's definitely good to go public!

I'm glad you guys like it. Lets hope John sees this...:)

...on my slow desktop, if it passes that I think it's ready. although, with dial-up it may be awhile on the download...
edit: It works! Very fun, too. It would be a great addition to PortableApps. The only problem I had was if I hit enter on the player select screen, it would load the game, but not show any on the tanks. Most linkly not an issue, and a glich in the game code itself.

Works great. I think it's ready for a beta release.

I think so too. AFAIK the next step would be a public release but that's up to John.

In terms of usability and saving settings and stuff, I think this is ready for prime time. I love allt he modes and settings in the game itself, and it's pretty simplistic.
I do encounter problems from time to time using highest settings moving between PCs, so I usually set it to the medium, where it works for all PCs
Great job!

I got version 2.7 to run ONCE on a friend's laptop, but since then, on every computer I've tried (reinstalled 2.7 and just tried 2.8 ), I can't get it to work. Before, I got to the main menu, but then the program would not respond. Now, I get the development splash screen, but then, nothing.
Assistance, anyone?
What happens if you try a clean install (delete the ATAnksPortable and then reinstall)?
I experienced some weird things like a black window for 20 seconds but I think that´s due to me running Windows virtually.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
That's actually what I tried (a clean install)- several times too. Even re-downloaded the paf.exe. Today, On yet another laptop, I extracted the program to the desktop, rather than to my drive, and it ran. I then closed the program (properly), moved the folder to my drive, and successfully ran it from there, too. (That was version 2.7, though.)
So, I'm really not sure. I'll try running it again.
I works great. I have no problems with it and everything seems to be in order.

I must have done something wrong. I removed the files and than reinstalled.
The window shows up but nothing in it. If I move it around the screen I get some things to 'draw' (Play, OK, BACK)
Running Windows 2000 sp4
Looks like some kind of grphic-related not-refreshing thing.
I never had that, but I never tried on Win 2k. Maybe someone else with Win 2000 can try?
I just saw that they released 2.9
Maybe I can get the upadte out this week. Lets hope they fixed the bug

Ok so I know this game works now because I just tried it on WIN XP pro. So I guess WIN 2000 is the loser lol
Great game. Let me know if I can do anything to test against WIN 2000.
Please test on Vista and Win 2000.
I also hope this fixes the bugs some had.

Deleted old version...reinstalled...still didn't work.
If I move the window around it draws some of the buttons but I can't click any of them.
I don't know if this is a problem with the launcher or atanks. When I updated to the new version, some of my weapons from a saved game are gone (funky death is really the only one I've noticed). Also there are new weapons (i.e., funky bomblet, funky deathlet) that when shot fall through the bottom of the screen/window endlessly. The only way to continue the game is to quit and restart. Any ideas?
Edit: I did a little more research and it looks like it is a atanks problem, not the launcher. One thing that the launcher could do is have the ability to delete old saved games that are no longer needed.
they added new weapons. Didn't know that they removed some too. IN their forum they say that there might be bugs coming with the new weapons...
How should the Launcher know that they aren't needed any more? I'd rather not start deleting stuff in the Data folder.

They released 3.0 on may 31
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I know they did but the last time I checked (2 weeks ago)only the linux version was there. Now that the Windows version is out expect an update soon.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
i can make a winning, because i can't use the weapon.. why there isn't clue how to control the tank and how to use the gun & special weapon..???
I Love Allah
Open the help.html file in the main folder (ATanksPortable) and you will see a "Help" link in the General Atomic Tanks Issues" section. It leads to a howto/docs page on the official site with instructions how to play the game.

Yeah, I've been waiting and waiting for a windows version... this is like the most used program on my papps! I really need some of those bug fixes. Anyway, did they change the weapons file again? Just a straight copy over won't work right?
/sylikc
I havent had the time to take a look at their update due to upcoming exams. I will post an update next week. Sorry for the delay.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
So anyway, I just extracted the new one over the old one in the apps directory. Seemed to work out A-OK. I suppose that's all that's necessary for the 3.0 upgrade.
/sylikc
yes.

Alright... I no longer need to wait for a windows binary to be released... I've figured out how to build it using the instructions at
http://atanks.forumwise.com/atanks-thread15.html
Simply put, download all source files, then use the mingw compiler to build, while customizing the Makefile using the steps from the forum.
Anyone need help let me know, or those too lazy to make a build, I can put it up somewhere
/sylikc
has been released. Just a note, in case you missed it.
Havent had much time to update this one lately.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Lol, don't worry, ever since you put this up, since it's become my favorite game I've been doing some development on it. For all foreseeable future versions, you can just UPX it and use the current launcher.
Portableapps is almost like an advertising beacon for some of these lesser known projects... I think that's a great service to these works of art!

It (version 3.2) works , but I found bugs:
This is a great game and should go official
If you press F1, a screenshot will be taken and will be saved to
App\ATanks\scrnshot.bmp
.Maybe this is changeable somehow.
Lets update and release this, Simeon. Do we have a high quality logo somewhere for the splash?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I dont know about the icon though. Maybe someone creative can do one?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
Good news!
well version 3.2 is out, and I can tell you it's worth the update since I've been doing active development on it. For those who said there was no close button before, I put it in
I believe the latest icon used in the binary has some transparencies and looks pretty cool. You could probably post into the atanks forum to see if Jesse et al. would create one?
