Final Release Thread

If you are a software developer and you have created a PortableApp, LimeWire Portable for example, and have released a stable version, please post a reply to this thread so that the links are in one place. Please be sure that the PortableApp is not in beta. Thanks!

Explain "stable version"

Explain "stable version"
[RC 1,2,3, one of the official releases???]

What do you want a link to?
The thread discussing the app? The app itself?

What is it you are trying to accomplish?

Thanks,
Tim

I want links to the apps

I want links to the apps themselves, for download purposes. This thread is meant to combine all the links into one post. As links are added, I'll edit my post to include them. A "final release" is a non-beta, bug-free version. Just like PortableApps has released the new version of FileZilla. There are no bugs in the newest release of FileZilla, unless the original code had bugs in it to begin with.

Still

I'm not sure how this would differ from:
https://portableapps.com/apps
Which would link to all the officially released apps.

As far as being bug free that's always open to interpretation, we released three versions of Sumatra PDF Portable 0.8 before we got it right [we hope]

Unless Officially Released by PortableApps.com I would not want to put an app on the same standing as an Official release, no matter how confident the creator feels about.

I've seen more than a couple of apps were the developer said "nothing left behind" only to have a long thread of all the stuff he missed because he didn't know how to vet his app.

Again, I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish?

Brings up a good point though

Say I'm developing something Wink

Say it works fine on my computer...(famous last developer words)

Say I don't see any issues posted to the forum in while.

Who says that it is ready? I'm guessing that it has been and still is 'when Mr. Haller says it is ready'. I'm sure that worked fine early on, but as the app base grows it would be rude of us to assume that Mr. Haller will be able to review in depth every launcher that gets posted.

I mean no disrespect and I apologize if I am overstepping my bounds.

Going forward, what standard procedure can be put in place for calling a launcher 'stable'. Not necessarily PortableApps.com Official, as it is Mr. Haller's sandbox and he should be allowed to retain control of what he hosts, but stable. Could a PortableApp test {tool;procedure;standard} be created to give us a way from differentiating between "Development Test" and Stable-but-not-"Official".

To bring this back to the original post. If we look at being hosted on PortableApps.com as being called up to the majors. And the Development/Test page as the promising rookies that the recruiters have their eye on. Then maybe a separate page for the minor league. Again the forums were fine for this purpose when there weren't many apps in the minors. But as the community grows maybe it would help if there was a Development/Test style page the the developers could add themselves to. Maybe with an additional field to indicate if it has been deemed stable or not.

Again these are just my humble ramblings. Take them for what they are worth.

I like the idea of a "Stable

I like the idea of a "Stable but not official" section....it could make things easier for John and for other users to find apps that have been verified as ready-to-go, but are just waiting for an official splash and a digital signature. I was actually planning on posting that as a suggestion tonight lol.

Makes sense..

This makes sense, especially if you think of it in these terms:

  1. Development Test = alpha (or beta for non-vetted developers)
  2. Pre-Release = beta
  3. Stable = release candidate
  4. Official Release

This is meant to create a

This is meant to create a list of developed software that PortableApps did not create, meaning someone else, a forum poster for example, created the app. And since everyone seems to be picky about what kind of release the app is, just post a link to the download site of your app, please include a small description. The app can be beta, rc1, 2 it doesnt matter. If you want it to be beta tested then post a link in this thread.

About that...

I don't think anyone updated this recently. That's why I like the other one (that, and the fact it's a wiki) Wikis Rule! Smile

Limited access Development Test page vs. Thread

There are more development test apps than are listed in either Ryan's page http://cubegames.net/development/current_projects
or in the Portable Apps page
https://portableapps.com/development/test.

These pages are great in that they are concise and organized.
The down side is that they are not as generally open to posting as the forum threads. Ryan's page has a separate login, and I'm not sure who has the access to update the PA page.

Posting them all in a forum thread is open to all, but can get messy, and like many threads, it will just get buried.

I like having the list pages, but I think it's vital to get as many of the development test releases on it as possible, and to keep it updated frequently - it's more work than the Official Release page, since dev tests can change daily. So the list needs to be freely accessible to all developers, and they need to be strongly encouraged to update it.

I know that one of my suggested apps (Hugin) got picked up by powerjuce, who did a great job cranking out a Dev Test quickly, but it's not on either list. A quick search of the words "Development Test" shows several apps that aren't on either list (Juice, Stellarium, EraserDropTarget).

Please don't interpret this as criticism of the people maintaining these lists.
I'm just hoping that we can come up with an easy-to-implement solution for this. This issue is part of the basic purpose of this site!

Of course, as they say, be careful what you wish for: if there was a fully comprehensive list of EVERY developing app on this site, I'd never leave my computer. Wink

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Mhm.

I try and update the DT page on here as often as possible, but only when someone asks.
If needed, I can open up the wiki page for anonymous users, but it's locked to logged in users to avoid spam.
