thunderbird to go?

hi

I have searched all over and thought Thunderbird Portable was the way to go, but now am confused.

I run Thunderbird on my office desktop computer and LOVE it - I am going to be travelling and wanted to use THunderbird portable.

But I want to sync up with what I already have on my desktop and when I return home sync again - am I off track - can thunderbord portable not be used for this use?

The mailbox and settings for

The mailbox and settings for ThunderbirdPortable are stored in Data\profile. The mailbox and settings for the one on your desktop are stored in exactly the same format, but hidden away in your Documents and Settings folder somewhere.

It is possible to synchronize the two. The Local Folders collection, for example, might be what you are talking about, it should be possible to copy the folders back and forth. But note that the copy process will overwrite one instance, and if that instance contains one or more messages that aren't in the other, they could be lost permanently. The synchronization process needs to be thought out and implemented carefully.

I find it easier to use IMAP mail that way, since the folders and messages are kept on the server. When either the local or portable Thunderbird start, they show me what is on the server. I can even run them both at the same time, though not for anything too complex.

But if you are careful you can synchronize things the way you describe. John lists some instructions at https://portableapps.com/support/thunderbird_portable. I've not tried Toucan for that task, or looked at the Plugins available to see if there is one that handles the task better (since I am happy with IMAP).

the forum for Profile Sync, I think this is the best and easiest way to do what you want to do... Wink

(Profile sync is portable and was done to sync your profiles in Firefox and Thunderbid both installed and Portable).

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

It

was also written by me a long time ago and it no longer supported. It is for that reason that I would recommend Toucan, which is basically what Profile Sync turned in to.

then

you should update and support profile sync again... since I don't use toucan... Wink

No, talking seriously, I think toucan is a full "suite" for many things, but if I just want to sync my profiles I don't need the whole toucan... I tried toucan once, and I prefer to backup creating zip files (with 7zip) by myself... I already have the tool on my PDrive and can do other things with it, like ziping and unziping other stuf.... but to sync my profile only, then profile sync... that's why I prefer it...

BTW, thanks for that tool, it's very useful.
